Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1

Your adventure starts as your fly into Jackson. From here, you will meet your guide, who will assist you in your flight to reach Mt. Hagen. Fly into Kagamuga airport, where you will be transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a full tour of the Mt. Hagen township. The exciting local market is a favorite.

Day 2
Niksel/ Sepik

Fly to Mt. Hagen on a charter flight. Here, you will be met by your local guide, who will lead your adventure into the Sepik region, home to the magnificent Sepik River. Meet locals and learn about a culture that rarely encounters the outside world. Set up camp tonight and relax in the great outdoors.

Day 3
Sepik/Niksel

Spend the full day exploring the area. Take a trek through the wilderness led by a knowledgeable local, who will fill your head with interesting tidbits about the flora and fauna. Participate in cultural activities and spend time getting to know the people. Tonight, enjoy a locally-sourced meal and sleep once again in your tent.

Day 4
Sepik - Yambaitok

Take a private charter flight into Yambaitok in the Yuat Valley. This is on the border of East Sepik and the Enga Provinces. Dive straight into the local culture - you are met by your guide, greeted with a handshake and the traditional welcome dance. Venture into the rainforest and discover the area’s unique wildlife. Species in the area include the stunning Birds of Paradise and the smallest frog in the world. After an adventurous, culturally-insightful day, retire to your tent for a restful sleep.

Day 5
Yambaitok

Spend a full day exploring the area. Trek into the rainforest and check out the traditional, local villages. You can observe cultural activities and see if the rumors of the people possessing magical powers hold truth. These powers are linked to the local’s traditional underground oven that’s used to roast vegetables. Overnight at camp once again.

Day 6
Yambaitok - Kompiam

Take a chartered aircraft to Kompiam, a district in Enga Province. Shop the local markets and mingle with the friendly locals. Visit the area’s health center and the local schools as well. In the evening, you’ll have the rare opportunity to view a Courting Ceremony, lending you further insight into local culture. Bed down in your tent this evening and let Kompiam’s natural surroundings sing you to sleep.

Day 8
Ambullua

Spend the day investigating the surrounding mountains in the Jiwaka Province. Take a nature walk and learn about the area’s flora and fauna. Trek through the countryside and visit local villages. The people are friendly to outsiders - exchange cultural tales and insights with them. Spend tonight in humble accommodation in an Ambullua Village.

Day 9
Ambullua - Mt. Hagen

Fly by chartered aircraft to Mt. Hagen, upon which you’ll be treated to an aerial view of the natural setting. Once you arrive at your destination, check into the Highlander Hotel. You have the afternoon free to explore the area at your leisure - take a meander around the village and check out the sights, or relax in your comfortable room.

Day 10
Port Moresby - Departure

It’s the final morning of your trip. Stretch your legs early before taking your transfer flight to Port Moresby. From here, you will be assisted with your connection to your international flight, either home or to your next exciting destination.

The hotel's buildings are inspired by traditional architecture, with thatched roofs, and are surrounded by landscaped grounds. Each of the 60 rooms has a color television, IDD telephone, air conditioning and of course a private bathroom. Some rooms are equipped with broadband Internet, and access is available to all guests in the business center. The Poolside Restaurant serves breakfast and lunch on an outdoor terrace and Palmuri serves an à la carte dinner menu by an open stone fireplace. The Highlander is 10 miles from the Mount Hagen Airport (HGU).

 

Rondon Ridge Lodge

A stylish contemporary lodge around 40 minutes from Mount Hagen, Rondon Ridge sits at over 7000ft above sea level with spectacular views over the Wahgi Valley. It is perfectly located for nature treks and for visiting the local tribal villages. The lodge has just 12 bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and powered by the lodge's own hydroelectric power plant. In a nice touch, the beds are warmed every evening to protect guests from the cold mountain air. There is also a main lodge with bar, restaurant and lounge area.
