As the trip progressed strangers became friends. Particularly special was the effortlessness: perfect logistics, never having to worry about anything, and, of course, the charming and thoughtful way you organised everything.

Capital of Hokkaido island prefecture, Sapporo is the gateway to Japan's northern mountain wilderness. It's a modern, cosmopolitan metropolis of nearly two million inhabitants that's known for its parks, festivals and abundant snow. As a young city, there is not much "traditional" Japanese character to Sapporo, having been officially founded at the end of the Edo period and laid out in a grid of wide avenues and boulevards. But the city is yet a major draw for tourism, with more than 14 million visitors every year, who come for its warm, temperate summers and cold, snowy winters.

Of Sapporo's festivals, the Yuki Matsuri - Sapporo Snow Festival - is the most popular, drawing two million people each year to see its fantastical ice sculptures adorning Odori Park. Beer aficionados will also recognize the name Sapporo as one of Asia's best-selling premium lagers, and the brewery is another major sightseeing stop for visitors to the city. Sapporo also boasts a dynamic contemporary arts scene, showcased in a number of galleries, as well as sculptures and artworks around the city.
