The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK, or simply North Korea) is the ultimate remote land; no other country has cut itself off quite so completely from the international community, making it one of the world’s most fascinating destinations. Visiting North Korea offers an unparalleled learning opportunity – from quotidian life to the grand spectacle of the Mass Games, it is an extreme contrast in cultures that exceptionally few outsiders ever have the chance to experience. North Koreans are fiercely proud of their country and culture and display total devotion to their late "Great Leader," Kim Il Sung. It is a socialist country with no free enterprise or consumer culture, and while Anti-American propaganda is prevalent, it is important to realize it is not directed at ordinary citizens, but rather government policies. North Koreans are generally warm to visitors, and the country is absolutely safe, clean and surprisingly beautiful. There is grandeur to Pyongyang, with its imposing buildings and monuments, and beyond this modern capital city there is gorgeous countryside, mountain and coastal areas.
The North Korean government has been accused of continuing human rights abuses, and consequently many people refuse to visit on point of principle. Remote Lands' bespoke North Korea journeys are in no way an endorsement of the country's autocratic regime; they are an enlightening, one-of-a-kind experience that can lead to a greater understanding of the last closed country in the world. Of course, given the current political situation, we continue to keep a very close eye on developments there.
