The Land of the Morning Calm has had a tumultuous history, despite its serene sobriquet. In modern times, many older Koreans still cannot let go of the wartime atrocities they witnessed and experienced during World War II under Japanese occupation and the bloody, divisive Korean War that followed. However, during a period of military rule that continued until the mid 1980s, the South Korean economy grew significantly, and the country was transformed into a major financial power. South Korea was dubbed one of the Four Asian Tigers - which includes Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore - during this time. In 2002, it jointly hosted the FIFA World Cup with Japan, a move that brought the two countries together and was a major step in burying the hatchet once and for all. With several international events scheduled for the foreseeable future, including the Gwangju Biennale, the Pusan Film Festival, the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu and the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea is poised to be a major world player in all aspects of industry and culture.
