The mountainous area where the Tsaatan people live in northern Mongolia has a very harsh climate unsuitable for breeding cows, sheep, goats or camels. The only viable domesticated breed is reindeer. These animals are used for transportation of people and supplies as well as providing the meat and dairy products on which the Tsataan people survive. The life of the Tsataan people revolves around their vast herds of reindeer. They move from place to place throughout the year, living in portable teepee-like structures, in order to properly care for their stock.
The Mongolian Reindeer Fund's objective is to assist the Tsaatan Reindeer People in generating income and reducing poverty through employment creation, health care services, livelihood improvement training, education and veterinarian health care services.
There are currently fewer than 50 Tsaatan families remaining. It would be a terrible loss to the world to lose these very special people. Contributions to the Mongolian Reindeer Fund will help ensure the longevity of this unique community of people.
