Located in the hyper-modern Pudong New Area of Shanghai, the Grand Hyatt occupies the top 34 floors of the iconic, 88-story Jin Mao Tower, and is the second-highest hotel in the world, having recently been outstripped by the new Park Hyatt. All 555 rooms and suites have floor-to-ceiling glass windows for breath-taking (and vertigo-inducing) panoramas over the constantly morphing metropolis. The interiors are luxurious, with a vaguely Art-Deco aesthetic as a nod to Shanghai's Jazz-Age past, and include lacquered wood, muted gold details and velvety upholstery in neutral colors. The marble-clad bathrooms include a 360° shower. There is an indoor pool, a fully equipped fitness center with steam rooms and hot tubs, and a spa which offers all kinds of skin treatments as well as aromatherapy, hot stone and traditional Chinese massage. The hotel's dozen restaurants, bars, and clubs include the Cloud 9 cocktail lounge on the 87th floor; the Patio, a live-jazz lounge in the hotel's soaring 33-story atrium; and Club Jin Mao, where you can sample local specialties, such as braised bean curd with hairy crab roe. There also a full-service business center and high-speed wired and wireless Internet throughout the hotel. The hotel is a 40-minute drive from Pudong International Airport (PVG).

Mansion Hotel
Opened in May 2007, this renovated historical property in the middle of the French Concession is a much-needed addition to Shanghai's boutique hotel industry. Originally designed by French architect Lafayette in 1932, this five-story property was the residence of Sun Ting-sun (a partner of the infamous Shanghai gangster Do Yue-sheng) until the liberation of the city in 1949. During this period, the villa also served as a venue for the most extravagant parties, attended by Shanghai's elite. The hotel preserves a vast collection of original artifacts, ranging from furniture and personal toiletries to photographs and deeds of former occupants and visitors. There are two restaurants and the rooftop has been renovated into a bar, which looks out over the low rooftops of the French Concession. With 32 opulent guest rooms, a cocktail lounge, a penthouse lounge and a private boardroom, the hotel features Concession-era French-Asian décor and modern amenities: high definition flat-screen televisions, iPod stereos, Jacuzzi baths and wi-fi Internet access complement antique armchairs and ottomans, velvet drapes and fainting couches. Although there is no business center, each room is equipped with a business desk, a three-in-one printer, fax and scanner, and wi-fi connectivity. There is no fitness center or spa.
