Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace
The 347-room (64 of which are guest rooms and suites), yellow sandstone Umaid Bhawan is one of the great palaces in India, completed in 1943 after 15 years of construction based on a design by renowned Edwardian architect Henry Lanchester. The Singh royal family still lives in a wing of the palace, which was named after the grandfather of the current maharajah. Although the palace was built in an Art Deco style that was popular at the time, there are Indo-Sarcenic influences and even a Renaissance-style cupola. There are five sumptuously appointed room types - palace room, royal suite, historic suite, Maharani Suite and Maharajah Suite - all with gilt furniture and elegant artwork. There are two restaurants and the Trophy Bar is a fine place to unwind. Other unique amenities include billiards tables, tennis and squash court, croquet lawn, jogging track, fitness center, the Jawaharat boutique for ethnic jewelry (located within a larger on-site shopping arcade) garments and souvenirs, Palace Museum and Library, business center, Jiva Spa and temperature-controlled indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
