Minamikan Ryokan
Built in 1888 on the banks of Lake Shinji, Minamikan was a favorite of authors such as the beloved "local" Yakumo Koizumi (Lafcadio Hearn), Yasunari Kawabata and Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Their autographed poems are framed in the lobby of the ryokan, which has just 12 rooms. The property is also well known for its karesansui-style garden, which features white sand and pine trees over 200 years old. All rooms overlook the lake or garden and are either Western or Japanese in style, all with tatami rooms but some with futon mattresses and others with Western-style beds. Breakfast and dinner are served in the ryokan's single restaurant, which offers Matsue-style cuisine, which emphasizes seafood indigenous to Lake Shinji. Minamikan is 30 minutes from Izumo airport (accessed by a daily 1.5-hour flight from Tokyo). Guests can also reach Matsue from Osaka via a 3 hour 40 minute train ride.
