Cameron Highlands Resort
Set on a plateau almost 5,000 feet above sea level, this luxury boutique resort is surrounded by rolling hills, tea plantations, and strawberry farms. Fifty-six rooms and suites are housed in colonial-style architecture, featuring tall French doors, timber-beamed ceilings, and plantation shutters. Much of the area, in fact, retains its colonial heritage –some even refer to the Highlands as “the little corner of England in Asia.” The resort’s genteel charm extends to the guest rooms, which feature teak furniture and silk fabrics. All rooms have balconies that overlook an 18-hole golf course. The onsite Spa Village offers treatments based on ancient tea rituals and produce from the surrounding jungle. There is also a reading room with a fireplace and leather couches, and a snooker room that boasts a resident pianist. Dining at the hotel means a choice of local and Continental dishes in the Dining Room, or traditional Japanese at Gonbei. Afternoon tea at the Jim Thompson Tea Room is a must, as much of this hotel is dedicated to the American silk merchant (and former CIA agent) who mysteriously disappeared in Cameron Highlands in 1967. Located in the state of Pahang, the resort is a 3 ½ hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, or a 90-minute drive from the Sultan Azlan Shah airport.
