Angsana Maldives Ihuru

Surrounded by shallow lagoon on a coral reef, the Angsana Ihuru has just 45 thatch-roofed, beachfront villas scattered amongst the palms on this tiny atoll. Each villa is decorated with minimalist, contemporary furnishings and has a private garden, veranda, dining and sitting areas, and an outdoor shower. There are a multitude of ways to spend your days: scuba, snorkeling, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, wake boarding, water skiing, canoeing, banana-boat riding, playing volleyball, island hopping, or shopping in Male. The Riveli restaurant serves a combination of Asian, Mediterranean and Maldivian cuisine with seating available on a deck right next to the sea, and the Velaavani Bar has cocktails and snacks throughout the day. The Angsana Ihuru has a fully equipped gym and the Angsana Spa, which offers beauty and massage treatments, including a post-sun re-moisturizing balm using honey and blended cucumber, and traditional Ayurvedic massage. There is also a business center with email, fax and Internet services. The Angsana Ihuru is 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport in Malé.

Angsana Maldives Velavaru

Located on Dhaalu Atoll, Velavaru means "Turtle Island" in Maldivian. The lagoon has virtually untouched reefs and dive sites, and the surrounding waters are full of dolphins and sea turtles. There are 79 villas with views of the Indian Ocean. Each was designed with a sleek, modernist aesthetic and has indoor and outdoor showers; a few villas have their own private pools. The resort's Funa restaurant is built over the water and serves Western seafood cuisine infused with Maldivian flavors; Kaani offers unique Western-style dishes with an Asian twist. Private dining is also available: choose the menu and location and have a candlelit dinner set up next to the ocean with your own waiter and chef. There are a host of activities and amenities to choose from: scuba, water skiing, snorkeling, windsurfing, canoeing, catamaran sailing, parasailing, cooking classes and night fishing, to name just a few. There is also a fitness center, a business center, and a wonderful Angsana spa with nine pavilions and three treatment rooms. The spa embraces holistic massage therapy with an emphasis on all the senses, and incorporates aromatherapy in their massage and beauty treatments. The Angsana Velavaru is a 40-minute seaplane journey from Malé International Airport.

Each of the villas has three individual tents: one for sleeping, one for living and one for bathing, with spa beds for in-villa treatments. There is a restaurant and bar overlooking the Indian Ocean, where eagle rays, turtles and dolphins are often spotted. Various private dining options are also available, including trips to a nearby sandbank or aboard a two-masted sailing yacht, where the menu and location are chosen by the guests. Possible activities include scuba diving, morning and night fishing, and manta ray and dolphin safaris. The Banyan Tree Madivaru is 30 minutes by seaplane from Malé International Airport.

Cocoa Island

The Cocoa Island resort, run by the exclusive COMO resorts group, is located on a less developed south Malé atoll, a 30-minute speedboat ride from the Malé International Airport. To the west side of the island is the Kandooma Channel, said to be one of the best dive sites in the Maldives, the east side of which is a quiet reef for snorkeling. With just 17 suites and 16 different villas, Cocoa Island is smaller and quieter than some other Maldivian resorts. Lodgings are modeled after traditional dhoni boats, and are joined to the island by wooden walkways. The rooms are constructed with rich brown timber and decorated with antique colonial ceiling fans, white curtains, handmade Italian linens, colorful area carpets and pillows. At the resort's restaurant, Ufaa, dine under an alang-alang and choose from a menu that changes daily, a mixture of Sri Lankan and Indian cuisine focused on locally produced food, seafood and tandoor. There is a fitness center with yoga facilities, as well as the COMO Shambhala Retreat, a spa offering holistic treatments and healing techniques from Asian cultures, a hydrotherapy pool, steam rooms and a meditation area. There is no business center, but wi-fi is available in all rooms at Cocoa Island.

Dhoni Mighili

A private island in the Ari Atoll, southwest of Malé, Dhoni Moghili is an incredibly private and exclusive retreat. There are two options for logding: sleep aboard one of their six beautifully appointed wooden dhonis, in which you can spend nights offshore and then sail around the archipelago by day; and six beach bungalows, hidden away in the trees off the island's pristine beaches. Each dhoni has daybeds in its bow, which can be converted to a spot to dine under the stars; the cabin has goose down duvets for chilly nights and Frette linens. They are also paired with one of the onshore beach bungalows, all of which have outdoor baths, waterfall showers and toiletries by L'Occitane; four of these also have private plunge pools. During your stay you will have a dedicated thakuru, or butler who can respond to any request 24 hours a day. Guests choose when and where to dine, and the resort chef will create a special menu personalized to your palate, using only the freshest ingredients from the surrounding areas. There is also a 24-hour bar serving imported beers, cocktails, wines and champagne. Activities include kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, and private dive trips with a personal instructor. The Sen Spa has indoor and outdoor treatment areas and focuses on a holistic blend of Eastern and Western techniques including Swedish, Thai and hot-stone massage. There is no business or fitness center. The resort is a 20 minute seaplane ride from Malé Airport.
