Karawari Lodge
The Karawari Lodge sits on a high ridge surrounded by dense tropical rainforest in Arambak country — one of the most remote and unspoilt areas of Papua New Guinea. One of earth's most complex of habitats, the Arambak rainforests house an immense variety of flora and fauna along with a unique tribal cultures. Nearby are villages where the people live off the land as they have for centuries: weaving baskets for fishing, or gathering and cooking their staple food from the Sago Palm. The Karawari's buildings are designed to reflect local architecture, with the main lodge built in the form of a boat-shaped tambaran or spirit house. The lodge incorporates a dining area, bar, lounge, and an sizable collection of Sepik sculptures and carvings. Ten separate cottages, each consisting of two twin rooms are spread throughout the gardens. All buildings are constructed from traditional bush materials and inspired by local architecture, but include mod cons such as en suite bathrooms, comfortable mosquito-netted beds, ceiling fans, and breezy verandahs. The Karawari lodge is only accesible by river, or by private helicopter transfer.
