Ambua Lodge
Located at 7,000 feet elevation in the Tari Gap area, the Ambua Lodge sits on the border between pristine montane rainforest and sweeping grasslands. Each of the 40 traditionally designed round huts, with thatched roofs and woven walls, has 180° windows for views across the valley, while in the surrounding forest, guests can cross vine bridges, discover a secluded waterfall, spot high-altitude orchids and rhododendrons and some of the 217 local species of birds. The area is also home to the flamboyant Huli Wigmen, who have formed a strong bond between themselves and the beautiful bird of paradise, imitating them in both daily and ceremonial life, decorating their human hair wigs with plumage. Tari is one of the few places left where men and women can be seen wearing traditional dress as part of daily living and men's wealth is still counted by the number of pigs and wives they possess. Ambua leaves a minimal footprint on this environment and generates twenty-four-hour clean electricity from its own small hydroelectric power plant. Lodge facilities include a main building housing the lounge, bar, dining room, and a cozy fireplace. There is also a separate heated Jacuzzi and sauna. The furnishings throughout are fairly basic, but comfortable, and the spectacular surroundings are worth the price of admission.
