Helga's Folly
Helga's Folly is a rarity in Sri Lanka and perhaps even in the world. It is a thoroughly individualistic slice of Art Nouveau cum psychedelia, complete with antique Dutch chests, Buddhist paintings, silk flowers, candelabras and views of Kandy Lake. Founded by Helga de Silva Blow Perera, granddaughter of George de Silva, architect of Sri Lanka's independence, Helga's Folly is not a hotel but "an anti-hotel," which is not to say that it doesn't provide the proper amenities. On the contrary, scores of celebrities have come to Helga's Folly, citing the staff's respect for privacy and anonymity and its superior service. Facilities include a lounge, restaurant, bar, private dining room, library, writing room, tropical garden with sitting area (for afternoon tea) with panoramic view of Kandy. Meals are a treat here as they are made to order; guests request dishes in the afternoon for dinner and in the interim, the meal is prepared entirely from scratch, and most of the ingredients, from coffee to pepper, are from the gardens on the premises. The hotel also has a large collection of 1930s movies, which enhances its air of a bygone era.
There are 40 simply furnished bedrooms, and public areas are decorated with murals, family photos, old books, antique cupboards of tamarind and ebony, and life-sized, ancient wooden figures. As per the Helga's Folly's "anti-hotel" policy, it does not have a business center or fitness center, but there is a small swimming pool, and tennis and boating on the lake can be arranged.
