Travel has been central to Jay's life since his first trip abroad to Europe during high school in the late 1970's. From that point on it was clear to him that whatever profession he followed, travel would be a major part of it.
Jay has been working and traveling internationally for the past 20 years --- living in Hong Kong for 7 years, working in Peru, and doing business in 50 countries spanning Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Some of his most memorable experiences come from times in some unassuming places: driving through the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon; meeting villagers in a newly opened part of Myanmar's Shan State; sand surfing in Paracas, Peru; attending a Film Festival in Jacmel, Haiti; and doing business deals in chaotic Lagos, Nigeria, and Bogota Colombia.
He is a four time entrepreneur, setting up his first company, The Black Box, in Hong Kong in 1994. The Black Box was one of Hong Kong's leading interactive media companies, receiving Silver in the Hong Kong Small Business Awards in 1997. Jay oversaw the development of projects for blue-chip clients including Apple Computer, AT&T Asia Pacific, Intel, Dow Jones Telerate, J Walter Thompson, Hong Kong Tourist Association, MTV Asia, and Standard Chartered Bank.
Jay was Co-Founder, President and CEO of Orientation.com, a multilingual Internet portal network with 70 employees and local products in 35 countries in 17 languages. The company was referred to as the "Yahoo of the Developing World" by Red Herring magazine in 2000 and received New York's prestigious Silicon Alley Fast 50 award from Deloitte Touche.
His next venture was an international IP telephony company that provided wholesale VoIP termination, broadband phone service, and prepaid solutions for consumers in the developing world. The company was active in China, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Europe, and had customers that included iBasis, Net2phone, and Startec.
Jay had previously worked with Catherine for two years while in Hong Kong, and when the opportunity arose to work together in a travel related business, it was a natural fit.
Jay is now located in Bangkok, running Remote Lands' Asia office, which provides logistics and up-to-the-minute support for our clients who are traveling in the region.
