Remote Lands to Aid Mongolia Nomads Hit by Brutal Winter

Mongolia is a stunning country of exceedingly warm people, stark beauty, and – as the past year has proved all too terribly – extreme weather.  As The New York Times reported on May 19, this winter’s “zud,” an extended period of heavy snows and bone-chilling sub-zero temperatures, wiped out roughly 17% of the livestock in a nation where one in every three people is a nomad entirely dependent on his animals for economic survival. It is an ongoing catastrophe not only for the herders, but also “the entire Mongolian economy,” according to the U.N. Development Program.

This season, Remote Lands will donate 100% of its proceeds from holidays in Mongolia to NGOs that are working to improve the plight of the country's nomads. A largely undeveloped land, Mongolia can be thrilling for intrepid travelers willing to eschew their normal creature comforts in return for true adventure and a profound learning experience – and now, directly helping a population that is universally kind to tourists but reeling from the worst winter in living memory.  Please call Remote Lands at +1 646 415 8092 or email info@remotelands.com for more details.

Live the Life of a Nomad
Gobi Grasslands

Stay in gers (yurts) specially built for you alongside those of a local nomadic family in the Gobi grasslands. Counterintuitively, the Gobi Desert is actually less than 10% sand – it is mostly treeless steppe.  Go horseback riding with the herdsmen to experience the Mongolian landscape as it has been for millennia, and help your host family with their quotidian tasks – from tending to their animals to making such staples of the local diet as buuz, (lamb or beef dumplings) airag (fermented mare’s milk) and hearty meat and vegetable stews.

The Dark Blue Pearl
Lake Hövsgöl

In Mongolia’s northernmost reaches, near the Siberian border, lies the gigantic, pristine 2 million-year-old Lake Hövsgöl, evocatively nicknamed “the Dark Blue Pearl.” Hike along the shores of this gorgeous natural wonder, which holds 70 percent of the nation’s fresh water, and feels far removed from the capital of Ulaanbaatar, just a 90-minute flight away. Explore Lake Hövsgöl National Park, home to such exotic wildlife as the rare musk deer, while nearby is the imposing Ikh Uul mountain, whose peak is nearly 10,000 feet.

Real-Life Fish Stories
Onon River

Experience world-class fishing on the Onon River, one of an astounding 3,800 rivers in Mongolia. The Onon is home to schools of taimen, the world’s largest salmon, making it a destination for anglers from around the planet. The taimen may live to be over 30 years old and grow to over 50 inches, and thrive in part due to the huge numbers of 20-inch Mongolian trout – which alone would make for destination fishing – that populate the river. Fly-fishing here adheres to a strict catch-and-release policy, using only single, barbless hooks.

Unearthing Prehistory
Flaming Cliffs

Helicopter or fly by charter plane to the Flaming Cliffs in the Southern Gobi, a famed archaeological site. So named because of their vibrant glowing orange appearance in the sunlight, the cliffs are a dramatic landscape of jagged red rocks that is rich in fossil finds – the first fossilized dinosaur eggs were unearthed here in the 1920s by the expedition of Roy Chapman Andrews, while fossils of velociraptor have also been uncovered nearby. Go for a trek through the desert atop a Mongolian two-humped camel, which are simple to ride regardless of experience.

PRIVATE JET HOLIDAY
Would you love to fly privately in Asia but assume it's too expensive? An economical option is to fly commercially to and from Asia, and pick up a jet in a hub city such as Hong Kong, Bangkok or Delhi. For an extended family or small group of friends, it can make a lot of sense to opt for this hybrid solution and charter a luxury aircraft that seats 6-10 people.

Amongst the destinations that are ideal for a private jet vacation are the cities of Rajasthan in northern India, Thailand and the countries of Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos), the islands of Indonesia, and China. A two-week holiday for two in Rajasthan or Thailand/Indochina, for example, can be as little as $80,000 on a King Air. Citations, Hawkers, Challengers, Falcons, Gulfstreams and other light to heavy jets are also available in Asia. Please call for further details.
