Remote Lands: Summer in Mongolia, Malaysia and the Himalayas

New York: May 1, 2010. As the summer travel season rapidly approaches, Remote Lands, the New York and Bangkok-based ultra-luxe Asia private tour operator, offers bespoke holidays for discerning families, from the exhilarating high altitudes of Tibet and the India Himalaya to the turquoise waters of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

“Many Asia destinations are ideal in June, July and August, especially for family trips,” said Catherine Heald, Remote Lands’ Co-Founder and CEO. “Whether it’s the clarity of fresh mountain air or tropical waters, opportunities abound for luxury holidays with both educational experiences and active adventure.”

Summer is the best season to experience the cradle of Khans, traversing Mongolia by horse and camel in the tradition of nomads whom you will meet along the way. Centuries of tradition come alive in archery, wrestling and horseback riding competition at naadam festivals, while fishing for the legendary taimen on the Onon River and the Flaming Cliffs in the southern Gobi desert are further draws.

Summer is the also the ideal time to experience the breathtaking terrain and temples of Tibet. Lhasa, home to the phenomenal Potala Palace, is a great base for trips to nearby monasteries and dramatic hikes, and can be combined with the Kathmandu Valley, as direct flights now link Tibet and Nepal. The Indian Himalaya region of Ladakh also offers rugged trekking and a seldom-visited treasure trove of Buddhist heritage along the Indus River Valley.

Turning the compass south, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea all have temperate weather along with world-class snorkeling, diving and fascinating culture. Papua New Guinea’s 700 tribes are as varied as its life aquatic. Be one of the few non-locals to attend the Sepik Crocodile Festival (August 11-12), a gathering of thousands of dancers, singers and storytellers.

Indonesia has perfect weather and is a great getaway for families with children of any age. Remote Lands arranges activities such as traditional kite making, river rafting, and volcano trekking. Stay at sumptuous child-friendly resorts with private pool villas on Bali, Lombok and Java, and take a yacht to Komodo Island.

On Malaysian Borneo, the Danum Valley beckons families with superb hiking and birding. Cruise the Kinabatangan River, boating through lush jungle for a chance to spot wild orangutans and proboscis monkeys, and visit Turtle Island off the coast of Sabah, where giant sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

Prices for a Remote Lands holiday start at $1,000 per person per day (based on double occupancy) and vary depending on the country.
