DETAILED DECRIPTION

This 11-day itinerary traverses the arid, mountainous terrain of the Upper Mustang region of Nepal. Tourism within this area is strictly controlled, but on this exclusive guided journey, you’ll have the chance to connect with locals, soak in unbeatable Himalayan views and stay in isolated villages in local guesthouses. Starting in Kathmandu, you’ll enjoy a few nights in luxury before fully immersing yourself in wild Mustang terrain, trekking on foot or exploring the region’s remote villages by car. At the end of your journey, enjoy a breathtaking private helicopter trip back to Kathmandu.

DAY-TO-DAY

DAY 1: Kathmandu

Arrive in Nepal in the capital Kathmandu, famous for its breathtaking mountains and crystal clear skies. In Kathmandu, you’ll be met by a guide at the airport and travel to Dwarika’s Hotel, your accommodation for the next two nights. Enjoy free time at the luxury boutique establishment, relaxing or exploring as you please for the remainder of the day.

DAY 2: Kathmandu

You have today free to enjoy the sites of Kathmandu. Book a luxurious treatment at the hotel spa, wander the bazaars of the old city, take a rickshaw to the historic Durbar Square and be sure to sample some local Nepalese cuisine. Kathmandu has no shortage of attractions - there are several UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Swayambhu - the Monkey Temple - and the Bhouda Stupa, not far from the hotel. Enjoy another pampered night at Dwarika’s Hotel before heading to Pokhara in the morning.

DAY 3: Pokhara

You’ll head to the airport early today to take advantage of the favorable flying conditions of morning. Pokhara is a scenic 25-minute flight from here - the panoramic views of Nepal’s countryside and mountains are a particular highlight of this itinerary. Once in Pokhara, you’ll be transferred to your hotel - the Fishtail Lodge, located in the middle of Phewa Lake and accessible only by boat. Today you can enjoy Pokhara, Nepal’s second-biggest city, at your leisure.

DAY 4: Kagbeni

Today you’ll depart your hotel early and make your way to the airport for the 28-minute flight to Jomsom, then make the hour’s drive to Kagbeni, in the Upper Mustang district of Nepal. This remote village is located in the grand valley of the Kali Gandaki river and is a picturesque stop on the Annapurna hiking trail. Once a popular trading point, now Kagbeni’s main source of income is tourism and it is considered a must-see for visitors trekking the area. Enjoy tonight in cozy, comfortable guesthouse accommodation.

DAY 5: Chhusang

Today you will trek from Kagbeni to Chhusang, a three-hour journey. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to meet locals and their livestock making their way between villages. You might also see ancient fossils littered on the track, especially around river beds. When you reach your destination - the small, rugged village of Chhusang - you’ll be met with more stunning views, and be welcomed into your guesthouse for the evening. This leg can also be driven, a trip of around an hour.

DAY 6: Ghami

Trek from Chhusang to Ghami today, traveling deeper into the Himalayas and the Kingdom of Mustang, exploring isolated villages and enjoying remarkable scenery and fresh mountain air. Today’s trek takes around five or six hours, though you can opt to drive - a journey of around three or four hours. On foot, travelers will pass ancient Buddhists chortens (stupas) dotted amid the arid landscape and see the longest mani (prayer) stone wall in Mustang. Once in Ghami, you have the afternoon at your leisure, checking into a local guesthouse for the night.

DAY 7: Tsarang

Make your way to the village of Tsarang today, a six-hour trek from Ghami. This is a moderately challenging leg of your journey, but you’ll be rewarded with more spectacular scenery - old chortens, unusual rock formations, rock caves, arid mountain ranges and gorges sprinkled with herds of sheep. In Tsarang, settle into a local guesthouse to recuperate or explore the village’s centuries-old monastery, a compound containing a nunnery, multiple old stupas and decorated with religious murals. You can also opt to drive this leg of the journey.

DAY 8: Lo Manthang

Trek to Lo Manthang today, a journey of around six hours. This ancient walled city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Lo and still retains many of its original structures, dating back to the 15th century. The village, which is now home to approximately 1,000 inhabitants is characterized by its mud-brick houses with white-washed walls and its Tibetan cultural influences. You’ll get to connect to local culture tonight by staying in a local guesthouse. You can also drive from Tsarang to Lo Manthang - a trip of around two hours.

DAY 9: Lo Manthang

Today, enjoy Lo Manthang at your leisure. There are four major temples - gompas - to explore, the oldest dating to the 15th century, and only two of which are currently inhabited. There’s also the white walled King’s Palace to visit, where the unofficial raja still resides. You can also spend your day speaking to local monks in one of the monasteries or just wandering the labyrinth of alleys that make up the village itself. Return to your guesthouse for the last night of your trek.

DAY 10: Kathmandu

This morning, you’ll hop aboard a private helicopter for the trip back to Kathmandu, stopping in Jomsom to refuel. Once more, enjoy unbeatable views of the Mustang mountain ranges, a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. Land in Kathmandu in the early afternoon and check back into Dwarika’s Hotel for the final night of your journey. If you have time, enjoy one last stroll through Durbar Square and make sure to try Kathmandu’s famous momo dumplings.

DAY 11: Departure

In the morning, you’ll check out of your hotel and say your goodbyes to Nepal, as you’re transferred to the airport and assisted with check-in for your international flight either home or to your next exciting destination. .
