ASIA: AN UNDERRATED SUMMER PLAYGROUND
While many Western travelers associate Asia with winter escapes, the region is just as compelling—if not more so—during the summer months. For those drawn to the great outdoors, Asia offers an extraordinary range of stunning landscapes to explore, from crystal-clear waters perfect for diving to towering mountains, alpine lakes, and sweeping grasslands, appealing to every type of adventurous traveler.
JAPAN'S NORTHERN STAR

Hokkaido in summer is a paradise for nature lovers, offering breathtaking landscapes, iridescent flower fields, and incredible wildlife experiences—all leaving behind the heat and humidity of southern Japan. Begin in Kushiro, where the vast marshlands and the elegant, red-crowned cranes showcase Japan’s untouched wilderness. Canoeing along the Kushiro River and savoring local robata-grilled seafood and sake complete the experience. Next, Akan National Park presents steaming volcanic landscapes at Mt. Io and the crystal-clear beauty of Lake Mashu. In Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spot brown bears while taking a cruise and take in the serenity of the Five Lakes. Furano and Biei burst into color with lavender at Farm Tomita and endless blooms at Shikisai no Oka. Don’t miss the surreal Blue Pond or a taste of creamy Furano cheese.
EASTERN PROMISE IN INDONESIA

Indonesia’s eastern isles offer raw beauty, rich traditions, and marine wonders—all best enjoyed during the dry season from May to September. From the wild savannahs of Sumba to the dragon-inhabited Komodo, the vibrant town of Labuan Bajo, and the historic Spice Islands, this region is a paradise for adventure and discovery. In Sumba, ancient traditions thrive amid rolling hills, megalithic tombs, and world-class surf. The eco-luxury retreat NIHI Sumba offers barefoot elegance in this untamed landscape. Komodo National Park stuns with its legendary Komodo Dragons, dramatic landscapes, and world-class diving—all best explored on your own private schooner. Highlights of your cruise include Pink Beach, manta-filled waters, and Padar Island’s iconic viewpoint—perfect for a summer escape where nature reigns supreme.
STEPPES TO HEAVEN

Few countries in Asia evoke the grand romanticism of wide-open landscapes and nomadic culture quite like Mongolia. This vast Central Asian nation—the birthplace of Genghis Khan and once the heart of the largest contiguous empire in history—beckons travelers with its unspoiled wilderness, rich heritage, and adventurous spirit. For an immersive experience, Genghis Khan Retreat, set within a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, offers a gateway to Mongolia’s untamed frontiers. More than just a polo haven, the retreat welcomes families and groups to explore the breathtaking steppe through activities like horseback riding, kayaking, mountain biking, and rock climbing—or simply unwinding in a serene spa setting. Three Camel Lodge in the south Gobi desert is also one of our favorites, home of the famous Flaming Cliffs where dinosaur eggs were discovered in 1923, two-humped Bactrian camels and spectacular sand dunes.
THE CAUCASUS CROSSROADS

Straddling the divide between Asia and Europe, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan offer a mesmerizing blend of ancient history, dramatic landscapes, and rich culinary and viticultural traditions. In Armenia, the forested retreat of Dilijan is a haven of alpine meadows and fresh mountain air, while Haghartsin Monastery stands as a striking example of medieval Armenian architecture. Georgia stuns with its breathtaking drives along the Georgian Military Highway, leading to the majestic Caucasus Mountains and the awe-inspiring Dariali Gorge, which plunges 3,300 feet deep. The country also boasts a stylish hospitality scene, with standout stays at Stamba Hotel in Tbilisi and Rooms Kazbegi, a mountain retreat with unparalleled views. In Azerbaijan, the historic city of Sheki is home to the Palace of the Sheki Khans, which once served as the summer residence of the most powerful khanates in the Caucasus.
