KEYS TO THE KINGDOM

Wat Arun, Bangkok

The obvious place to start a Thailand adventure is in Bangkok. The capital is the nation's political center, spiritual and cultural hub, and a magnet for migrants from all over the country. Many of Thailand’s attributes reach their zenith in the capital. Food is a highlight for many, and visitors can learn about the city’s culinary heritage on a tour of Chinatown and by perusing wet markets. Other Bangkok highlights include its royal palaces, the beautiful Wat Arun, and cultural curiosities like the teak home of mysterious silk magnate Jim Thompson. Chiang Mai offers a striking contrast to the capital. Here, visitors can receive blessings at temples such as Wat Doi Suthep or discover the secrets of Lanna cuisine via an immersive cookery class.

Where to stay: The Siam Hotel is set on three acres of verdant lawn along the city side of Bangkok’s main river, the Chao Praya. The Siam is a private 39-room luxury retreat with its own unique historical background located in Bangkok’s royal Dusit district.

LANGUID DAYS IN LAOS

Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang deserves its reputation as one of Asia’s most beguiling cities. The city is UNESCO World Heritage-listed, which means that most of its cultural wonders such as its royal palaces and ornate temples remain extant. Rise early to participate in an alms-giving ceremony where monks in saffron robes collect offerings. Other draws include Wat Phou Si, which sits atop a hill overlooking the city and offers incredible sunset views towards the mountains. Known for its left-field culture, Luang Prabang boasts several interesting galleries and bookshops, and venues that specialise in traditional arts and crafts such as bamboo and textile weaving. Alternatively, a stroll around the pretty tree and bougainvillea-lined streets reveals the city’s beautiful architecture, a mixture of traditional Lao and French colonial influences.

Where to stay: Amantaka in Luang Prabang is set south of Phousi Mountain and close to the banks of the Mekong River and the Luang Prabang Night Market. The resort, an old French colonial building, is surrounded by a spacious courtyard, and has 24 suites.

GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM

Hoi An

Vietnam is a destination that covers a huge array of bases. Hanoi is changing quickly but maintains a strong sense of identity. Full of things to see, from the architecture of the Old Quarter and the French Quarter to Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature, the Vietnamese capital lends itself to investigation. Cultural highlights include the National Museum of Fine Arts and a traditional water puppet show. In Central Vietnam, Hoi is a highlight for many. A one-time trading port, the town has some of Vietnam’s best-preserved architecture, tremendous shopping and a lively restaurant scene. Admire the charming pale-yellow buildings that house restaurants, art galleries, cafes, and tailor shops. Ho Chi Minh City deserves its reputation as Vietnam’s most dynamic city. The southern hub is the country’s main financial center and its relative affluence is reflected in its gleaming skyscrapers and swanky rooftop bars. The city has not surrendered its soul in the rush towards modernity. Centuries-old temples are seconds from busy streets; sidewalk hawkers serve delicious street food while the architectural mélange encompasses the French-inspired Opera House and General Post Office, as well as the Chinese pagodas in Cholon, the city’s Chinatown.

Where to stay: Located within Hanoi's Hoan Kiem district, Capella Hanoi is comprised of 47 palatial-style guest rooms, lavishly decorated in contrasting dark and light tones with lashings of color

CAMBODIA CALLING

Angkor Thom, the Gate of the Dead

For such a small country, Cambodia certainly packs a lot in. Phnom Penh went into sharp decline during the dark days of Khmer Rouge rule and the long civil war that ensued. Contemplate the grim reminders of that era at sites such as Tuol Sleng, a museum chronicling the genocide, and the Killing Fields, just outside Phnom Penh.  Trade the somber mood for the bustling atmosphere at Central Market and Russian Market where locals and visitors converge over food, clothes, and goods. See the gleaming Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, awesome royal sites sitting along the river, before settling in for the evening. For many visitors, Cambodia’s premier draw is the mind-blowing temples at Angkor just outside Siem Reap. The remnants of the capital of the once-mighty Khmer Empire that held sway over much of Southeast Asia are amazing, with relics like Wat, Bayon and Ta Phrom representing a glorious pinnacle of religious architecture.

Where to stay: As well as looking the part, Shinta Mani Angkor and Bensley Collection Pool Villas enjoys an ideal location in the heart of Siem Reap, tucked away down a quiet, leafy road in the city’s famous old French quarter.

THE JEWEL OF THE ANDAMAN

Ko Phi Phi All great journeys conclude with a little R&R time to unwind and reflect upon the experience and encounters of the past three weeks. This is no exception. The final leg of your journey takes you to Phuket, a tropical paradise with powdery white sands, palm trees, and warm turquoise waters. Enjoy luxurious accommodations ranging from cliffside villas to beachfront resorts. Start your days with a cultural excursion to Phuket’s Old Town, a charming area of Sino-Portuguese architecture and historic mansions. Then, relax by the beach or pool, soaking in the island’s natural beauty. On your final day, charter a private yacht to explore nearby islands, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, and discovering Phuket’s vibrant marine life. End your adventure with a sunset barbecue seafood dinner at your villa, a perfect close to your Southeast Asian escape.

Where to stay: Small is exceedingly beautiful at Trisara, an exclusive hideaway in Phuket’s unspoiled northwestern corner. The resort is located on a private bay. And with each of the property’s bijou collection of suites and villas featuring its own pool as well as jaw-dropping ocean views, total privacy is both achievable and desirable.
