NEW ASIA HOTELS WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT
The hotel and resort scene in Asia is not one for standing still, and new luxury hotels seem to be opening constantly. There is plenty to be excited about through the remaining half of the year, from Six Senses' debut in Japan to Capella continuing its expansion into Taipei to fantasies being made into reality in the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia. Here are some of our picks.
SIX SENSES KYOTO, JAPAN
Premier Suite Garden KingSix Senses Kyoto opened in the spring of 2024, marking the luxury wellness and sustainability brand’s entry into Japan and an exciting new addition to its flourishing urban collection. Conveniently situated among the iconic heritage shrines and palaces within the ancient capital, the property draws inspiration from the Heian period (794-1185), when Heian-kyo (now Kyoto) was the capital of Japan, considered by many the golden age of art and culture that gave birth to the “Miyabi” (courtly elegance) concept. The design narrative extends to the 81 guest rooms and suites, offering a sanctuary for contemplation. Specialty suites, from the Premier Suite Garden with a private Japanese courtyard to the 238 square-meter Three Bedroom Penthouse Suite, offer extended space for reconnection. Guided by the Eat With Six Senses ethos, the hotel's food and beverage offerings take guests on a journey through the ancient Japanese calendar. Sekki, the all-day dining restaurant, features hyper-seasonal weekly menus and drinks inspired by Japan’s 24 solar terms.
CAPELLA TAIPEI, TAIWAN
Capella TaipeiTaipei's accommodation scene is about to get a significant boost with the announcement of Capella Taipei, slated for opening in early 2025. Minutes from the iconic Taipei 101, this 86-key urban retreat promises to offer a unique blend of city energy and serene elegance. Conceived by the renowned André Fu Studio, the hotel's concept of a 'modern mansion' was birthed out of Fu's reflection of Taipei – a modern city that juxtaposes a world of vibrancy and poetic locality. His vision is defined by incorporating concepts of contemporary comforts, lifestyle entertainment and well-being while also capturing the feeling of a retreat, all within a sophisticated urban location. Culinary offerings at the hotel are likely to be a highlight. The Grill will feature innovative grilling, ageing, and smoking techniques, offering sustainably sourced, farm-to-table produce with a French-inspired seasonal menu. The Patisserie combines an art gallery's charm with a bakery's warmth, serving artisanal bread and in-house roasted coffee. Authentic Cantonese cuisine with Taiwanese influences and a premier Japanese Omakase restaurant will further enhance the dining experience.
MARSA AL ARAB, DUBAI, UAE
Marsa Al ArabLocated close to by Jumeirah’s other two flagship properties— the Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach Hotel — Marsa Al Arab is set to make a huge splash on the Dubai shoreline. When complete it will offer a selection of 390 rooms, suites, and penthouses, each featuring impressive 11-meter-wide floor-to-ceiling windows, with some also boasting balconies. It's clear why Jumeirah has dubbed its latest Dubai hotel a ‘playground for horizon seekers.’ Guests can also enjoy 10 remarkable restaurants, including a premium food court that blends convenience with culinary excellence. The hotel features four pools, one for families, an adults-only VIP area, and a serene, Instagram-worthy retreat within the three-story spa, ensuring relaxation for all.
NUJUMA, A RITZ-CARLTON RESERVE, RED SEA, SAUDI ARABIA
An ambitious visionSaudi Arabia’s ambitious plans for tourism are undeniably exciting, with Al-Ula being widely described as the next Petra. The Kingdom’s far-reaching strategy for attracting luxury travelers is taking shape in a highly appealing form on the shores of the Red Sea. The expansive eco-tourism project will see 50 luxury resorts open across a previously untouched archipelago of more than 90 islands in the Red Sea, surrounded by the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef system. Six Senses and St Regis properties are already open, and Nujuma, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, will be the next to be unveiled later this year. Accessed by chartered boat or seaplane, Nujuma features 63 overwater and beach villas, offering one-to-three-bedroom accommodations, spacious living areas and private pools overlooking the sea. Guests can marvel at the limitless starry night skies from the comfort of their villa through telescopes positioned on each deck.
BANYAN TREE KYOTO
Grand Serenity KingThe Banyan Tree makes its Japan debut this month, adding another tempting option to Kyoto’s stellar lineup of places to rest your head. Situated in prime location in the historic district of Gion And Higashiyama, the property enjoys a hilltop position, surrounded by bamboo groves, next to Kiyomizu-dera Temple and close to many of the imperial capital’s cultural landmarks. The property blends modern conveniences with a respect for Japan’s past. All 52 rooms feature a classic Japanese ryokan design–complete with shoji screens and tatami mats–with contemporary accents, making it perfect for guests who want to dip their toes into traditional Japanese hospitality while retaining all the benefits of an international hotel brand. Some of the rooms feature their own private onsen. Typical of The Banyan Tree, the huge 6,000ft spa is a feature with various Kyoto-only exclusives and even its own hot spring water source. Perhaps uniquely, The Banyan Tree Kyoto features its own Noh theatre stage, paying homage to an artform that dates back to the 14th century.
