Summer in the Caucasus: The Great Outdoors
The three countries that comprise the Caucasus region—Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia— shine during the peak summer months. Summer in Georgia means epic hikes and immersive cultural adventures. Begin in Stepantsminda with a journey through Sno Valley to Juta Village, where trails lead through alpine meadows towards majestic Mt. Chaukhebi. Marvel at the Dariali Gorge, a dramatic natural border carved by the Terek River, featuring towering granite walls and historic fort ruins. Challenge yourself on the iconic Gergeti Glacier hike, starting at the photogenic Gergeti Trinity Church and ascending 2,850 feet through spectacular landscapes. Explore the remote beauty of Truso Valley, discovering abandoned hamlets, mineral springs, and the historic watchtower in Ketrisi. Georgian hospitality comes to the fore via a traditional farmhouse lunch in Samegrelo, where guests can sample homemade wines and the region’s signature dish, Elarji—a hearty porridge made from coarse cornmeal blended with supple sulguni cheese. Adventure in Azerbaijan centers around Quba’s mountain highlights. Discover Red Town, the historic settlement preserving unique Mountain Jewish traditions, where approximately 3,000 residents maintain their ancient customs, language, and crafts. Ascend to Khinaliq, Europe's highest village, untouched by time, where life revolves around shepherding and traditional weaving. Engage with locals, sip tea, wander trails overlooking terraced pastures and dramatic peaks, or visit the local museum to learn about the village's rich history. Nearby, explore remote Griz village, which is famous for its distinctive language and cultural heritage and is perched at almost 7,000 feet in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Hike from Griz along the picturesque Griz-Galakhudat route to the beautiful Gurgur Waterfall. This 20-foot cascade, set at 7,185 feet, offers tranquility and panoramic mountain vistas, providing a truly authentic Caucasus experience. Griz village’s cultural authenticity and natural beauty make it a perfect location for deeper cultural exploration and outdoor adventures.
ARMENIA’S EPIC ADVENTURES

Armenia’s great outdoors beckon through dramatic landscapes and historic manna. Begin in the Debed Canyon, exploring UNESCO-listed monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, recognized masterpieces of medieval Armenian architecture. During summer months, follow the delightful “Blackberry Road” trail, abundant with ripe berries waiting to be picked along the way. Lori Province offers numerous hiking trails, picturesque villages, quiet monasteries, bicycling, horseback riding, and rafting opportunities on the Debed River. In mid-August, experience the annual Khorovats Festival in Akhtala, celebrating Armenia’s famous barbecue tradition with tastings, competitions, folk music, and traditional dances. In Dilijan, stroll the gentle Medieval Monasteries Trail through peaceful forests connecting Matosavank and Jukhtakvank monasteries, scouting for wildlife such as brown bears, lynx, wolves, wild boar, red deer, and various bird species like the Caucasian black grouse and various wild fruits. Explore nearby Ijevan, known for its Soviet-era architecture, sculptures park, WWII memorial, and the renowned Ijevan Wine-Brandy factory. Finally, join locals in the village of Aghavnavank to learn how to prepare losh bread and Tavush pork barbecue using traditional methods, while sampling homemade vodka and wines.
