4 Lakes to Visit in and Around Udaipur

It's the land of lakes, so jump right in – or maybe just check out the plush hotels and scenery. This cultural center of India has lakeside treats for travelers looking to put their eyes on something wet in arid Rajasthan.

Udaipur is one of the most memorable cities in Rajasthan and is very popular among travelers from around the world, defined by the bright colors of the ancient. Owing to the numerous bodies of water in the city – some of which feature palaces – Udaipur has been called the City of Lakes, home to both natural and man-made lakes built centuries ago by Hindu Maharajas who ruled over this land.

With lakes in the city and outside, a few of these lakes – by virtue of history, beauty, and convenience – are a cut above the rest.

Lake Pichola

Located in the heart of the city of Udaipur, Lake Pichola is surrounded by architectural delights and is the main lake that comes to mind when one thinks of Udaipur. Besides being situated next to the stunning City Palace of Udaipur, Lake Pichola is also home to an iconic luxury property from Taj hotels.

The Taj Lake Palace is considered one of the most unique and romantic hotels in Rajasthan, seemingly floating on the expansive waters of Lake Pichola. Also on the lake is the Leela Palace Udaipur, which features views of both Lake Pichola and the Aravallis mountain range. Finally there is the Oberoi Udaivilas, designed after the majestic Indian palaces of the Mewar region.

Lake Pichola should be visited during sunset and even at night for the lights, notable for the ghats where daily prayer takes place. Another recommended activity in this lake is the boat ride to get better views of the City Palace as well as the Jag Temple which is found on an island in the lake.

Lake Fatehsagar

Lake Fatehsagar is recommended for those looking for a quiet and relaxing haven in the middle of the bustling city of Udaipur. Lake Fatehsagar is surrounded by hills, a number of parks, and a quite a few temples. There are also three islands on the lake, one of which has the verdant Nehru Garden. The lake also features the Udaipur Solar Observatory, which is not open to travelers. Fatehsagar is one of Udaipur’s many man-made lakes, constructed in the 17th century by Maharana Jai Singh.

Lake Fatehsagar is the ideal place for a slow boat ride or for hiring a pedal boat for a more immersive experience. The lake is only open to visitors until 18:00, so make sure your trip ends around sunset.

Jaisamand Lake

Considered to be among the most beautiful lakes in this part of India, Jaisamand Lake is a nature lover’s retreat. Located a short journey of around 60 kilometers from Udaipur, this lake is a picturesque place to spend a leisurely morning or sunset if visitors choose to stay in one of the resorts located nearby.

There is also a wildlife sanctuary located close by, which means one can get a sight of migratory birds and other wildlife. The lake itself is located amidst natural settings and besides boating, it does not offer any activities as such. It is an ideal place for families to visit or the traveler looking for a break from the city.

Badi Lake

Located only about 12 kilometers from Udaipur, Badi Lake is a simple, convenient spot for hikers, bikers, cyclists, and those who enjoy taking long lakeside walks. For the best views, visitors can climb the hill nearby for a look at the sunset. The 338-year-old man-made lake, is devoid of most travel amenities altogether, and it’s an ideal spot for birdwatching without the crowds.
