Heed the poet’s advice, and walk in the footsteps of thousands of years of history as your expert guide takes you along the Jinshanling segment of the Great Wall of China. Feel the ancient stones beneath your feet as you learn about the Mongols’ massive siege of this part of the wall 600 years ago. Savor a sumptuous lunch on top of one the Wall’s ancient watchtowers, complete with tables, champagne and fine china.
Start your day early if you wish, with a private tai chi session or an early morning exploration of the exquisite temples and pavilions of the Summer Palace. Take a private vehicle to Central Beijing to visit the city’s most iconic sites. Visit the National Museum, one of the largest in the world. Walk through the massive Tiananmen Square and meet the steely gaze of Chairman Mao’s portrait hanging on the outermost wall of the Forbidden City. Pass through the gate that he watches over and tour the largest palace complex on earth, with 9,999 rooms and endless twists and turns. After lunch in the stylish Temple Restaurant nearby, board an old-fashioned bicycle rickshaw and wind your way through the old hutong neighborhoods of center city. Though these districts are fast disappearing in Beijing’s rapidly developing cityscape, in recent years a trend has developed of wealthy individual Chinese purchasing these properties - thereby saving them from destruction - and renovating them, updating the interior with elegant modern furnishings and luxurious interiors. Easily missed amongst the grand imperial architecture and sleek, modern skyscrapers that dominate the Beijing skyline, these historic neighborhoods will give you a taste of the bustling day-to-lives of centuries of Beijingers.
Share a luxurious brunch with your fellow passengers as your private jet whisks you from China’s modern capital to one from its ancient past. A history expert will lead you through the museum built around the Terracotta Army, an incredible collection of over 8,000 life-size models of soldiers dating back to the 2nd century BC. The army and the enormous mausoleum containing it were built as the tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China. In the belief that they would serve him in the afterlife, the face of each and every terra-cotta figure is unique and was made by hand. Your journey through this unbelievable collection of figures and artifacts is sure to teach you more about Ancient China than any book or movie could hope to. Board your jet once again and enjoy an elegant dinner en route to heavenly Hangzhou.
Awaken and choose from five delicious breakfast options that dot the ancient village in which Amanfayun is built. Refreshed, venture out onto the West Lake on a private, two-hour cruise of its ten traditional scenic locations. Ascend the Leifeng Pagoda to grab a magical glimpse of Hangzhou from its fourth story. Visit the renowned temple Lingyin Si, or “Soul’s Retreat”. Almost 1,700 years old, the monastery houses the largest sitting Buddha in China, an 82-foot tall gilded masterpiece. Trek to the nearby Temple of Goodness, Taoguangguanhai Temple, or Temple of Wealth, nestled into the forested mountains. Hike along the local tea trails, where some of the world’s finest tea is produced. Hangzhou is considered the Bourdeaux of the tea-growing world, and sampling the local products is a serene experience even for the least tea-minded of people.
Continue your tea-soaked tour of beautiful Hangzhou with a trip to the China National Tea Museum. The building’s very walls are made of tea bushes, and the exhibits explain the history and technique of tea production. Get a few more bird’s-eye views of the city from its three main pagodas, all built during the Song dynasties (960-1276 AD). Sink ever deeper into the city’s past as you stroll down Hefang Street, an ancient thoroughfare that is lined with Ming- and Qing- style shops and teahouses. Watch historical reenactments of daily life and dine on local cuisine. Receive a traditional Chinese medical check-up at Huqingyutang, the most famous Chinese pharmacy in southern China. Continue the pampering once you return to your hotel with a complimentary spa treatment in one of Amanfayun’s five facilities. An optional calligraphy lesson is available before you join all your fellow travelers for cocktails and dinner.
After a private vehicle returns you to your jet and your journey is back underway, indulge in another brunch above the clouds en route to Chengdu. During your visit to Dujiangyan Panda Base, you will have the rare opportunity to interact with panda bears face-to-face. The staff will lead you around their nature preserve and show you just how much work goes into the conservation of these rare and beautiful creatures. You can help the staff with their daily tasks and play a part in working for these bears' survival. After your day at the panda preserve, fly south to Lijiang and enjoy a private dinner on the way. You will spend the night at the elegant Amandayan, perched above Lijiang’s Old Town.
Spend your morning exploring the Old Town of Lijiang, practically unchanged since the rule of the Ming Dynasty. Breathe in the fresh mountain air as you meander along the willow-lined canals and cobblestone streets of this picturesque town. In the evening, take in an impressive cultural show highlighting the traditions and lifestyles of the people indigenous to the region. Impression Lijiang is directed by Zhang Yimou, famed director of numerous critically acclaimed films and of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony. After that introduction to the natives of Lijiang, you will have a chance to explore Mu Mansion, the ancient palatial estate of the city’s Nakhi rulers. Throughout your day you will likely stumble upon wonderful bits and pieces of southwestern China’s unique culture, from Tibetan Buddhist monasteries to walls covered in the ancient pictographic language called Dongba.
Join your fellow travelers on a trek far outside of town, out to the legendary Tiger Leaping Gorge. This river canyon is known throughout China as a gorgeous area to hike around and appreciate the rugged beauty and unique ecosystem of Yunnan’s mountains. Once you’ve worked up a healthy appetite, retire to Amandayan for cocktails and dinner. Gaze out over the Old Town while you are treated to a live musical performance on the traditional guzheng, and dine on an exquisite meal based on the local Nakhi cuisine.
Begin the day with another sky-high brunch as your journey takes you to Zhangjiajie National Park, where your tour will cut through the park’s dense foliage and beneath the awe-inspiring 2,600-foot tall sandstone towers that have captured the world’s imagination for centuries, and which populated the stunning fantasy world of Pandora in James Cameron’s 2009 smash hit Avatar. Take the Bailong Sky Lift - the world’s highest elevator - to the top of a 1,000-foot high cliff and look out upon stunning vistas of Zhangjiajie Park. Then, you will be whisked across the country once again to the buzzing, glittering metropolis of Shanghai.
Take a leisurely breakfast at Amanyangun, your peaceful sanctuary outside of downtown Shanghai. Then leave behind the serenity of the resort and dive right into the beating heart of urban Shanghai at the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. A historian will guide you through the shining, five-story monument to urbanization and to Shanghai’s future. Slow things down with a stroll through the Bund, where your architectural expert will teach you about the city’s past. You will be able to try out the local lunch options, including Shanghai’s world-famous soup dumplings. Your private tour will then take you to Shanghai’s M50 contemporary art district, one of the premier gallery districts in the region. A local art expert will be with you to give you context for all of the works you may see.
Get to know another piece of the city as you tour Shanghai’s Old Town in the morning. Relax in the Yu Gardens, where over 400 years of Shanghai elites have done the same. Transport yourself back to the city’s Jazz Age heyday in the French Concession, whose pre-war layout and architecture remains practically unchanged since the 1930s. Jolt yourself back to Shanghai’s miraculous present at the Shanghai Tower. An exhibit displays how small the city was in the 1990s, after which a trip up the observation deck underlines just how much has changed. For your final evening together with your fellow explorers, gather for cocktails and a performance of the region’s Kunqu Opera, followed by a sumptuous dinner.
Check out of your rooms, bid farewell to your companions and to China, and depart.
