Remote Lands Newsletter October 2015

For a relatively small country, Japan packs a huge variety of exciting destinations and dramatic landscapes into an area smaller than the state of California. Snow-capped mountains, dramatic coastlines, stunning volcanoes and countless hiking trails make the country a veritable paradise for adventurous travellers. World-class skiing and snowboarding on perfect powder in Hokkaido, climbing Mount Aso volcano, cycling through the beautiful Noto Peninsula and trekking along historic pilgrimage trails are but a few of the options.

A Japanese Adventure: Volcanos, Valleys, Shrines, & Spas We named ourselves Remote Lands because we love far-flung destinations that few tourists have ever even heard of (and most Japanese have never visited) such as the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site of Yakushima Island. Hike through lush forests to see some of the world's oldest trees - gnarly cedar trees estimated to be over 5,000 years old.  This carefully-curated two-week  itinerary also explores the remote areas of Kyushu and Shikoku including Takachiho Gorge and Shrine, Mount Aso, an active volcano, and the incredible landscape of the Iya Valley where you will explore traditional mountainside villages and relax at onsen hotels.
