Remote Lands Newsletter October 2015
For a relatively small country, Japan packs a huge variety of exciting destinations and dramatic landscapes into an area smaller than the state of California. Snow-capped mountains, dramatic coastlines, stunning volcanoes and countless hiking trails make the country a veritable paradise for adventurous travellers. World-class skiing and snowboarding on perfect powder in Hokkaido, climbing Mount Aso volcano, cycling through the beautiful Noto Peninsula and trekking along historic pilgrimage trails are but a few of the options.

Enjoy the perfect balance of action sports and relaxation as you discover Southern Hokkaido’s natural beauty.
A Japanese Adventure: Volcanos, Valleys, Shrines, & Spas We named ourselves Remote Lands because we love far-flung destinations that few tourists have ever even heard of (and most Japanese have never visited) such as the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site of Yakushima Island. Hike through lush forests to see some of the world's oldest trees - gnarly cedar trees estimated to be over 5,000 years old. This carefully-curated two-week itinerary also explores the remote areas of Kyushu and Shikoku including Takachiho Gorge and Shrine, Mount Aso, an active volcano, and the incredible landscape of the Iya Valley where you will explore traditional mountainside villages and relax at onsen hotels.
Cycling Coastal Japan Explore Japan’s stunning coastline on this 11-day outdoor itinerary that incorporates cycling, hiking, and visits to the country’s best hot springs. You will begin in Tokyo at the new Aman Tokyo hotel or the Peninsula Tokyo before heading to the rugged shoreline of Noto Peninsula on the Sea of Japan, meandering through beautiful countryside and stopping in tiny towns and big cities all the way to Takayama. Take a bullet train to Kyoto where you will stay at the Ritz Carlton or Hyatt Regency Kyoto and have free time to explore the city’s wealth of historic and cultural landmarks. This itinerary includes around 270 miles of cycling through mildly challenging hilly areas and is suitable for moderate fitness levels.
Sacred Scenic Sites of Japan This 14-day itinerary will take you on a journey of a lifetime through Japan’s stunning landscapes and sacred sites, experiencing both Old Japan and New Japan.
