Remote Lands Newsletter December 2014

There are beach holidays, and then there's the Maldives. While it may seem decadent to travel so far for the perfect beach, anyone who has been to this turquoise paradise knows that there is simply no better place to relax, de-stress and reconnect than this Indian Ocean hideaway. While most holidays focus on how to maximize the days with touring and activities, the trick here is to blissfully shut down and tune out, letting the waves and breezes lull you into a beautiful sense of calm.

As the world’s foremost ultra-luxe Asia tour operator, Remote Lands takes a particular interest in being in the know when it comes to the world’s leading tropical oasis.  It can be daunting decoding the myriad resorts that are available, with over 130 talc-white beach gems to choose from – but our General Manager, Victoria Hilley, had the enviable fortune to make the Maldives her home for a few years, and with her comes a wealth of knowledge and advice on how to select the perfect resort for the perfect getaway.  For Victoria, finding the ideal resort for each client's own personal tastes, desires and budget is a science and a passion whether you are honeymooners or an extended family; late night partiers or early risers; serious divers, surfers or sun seekers; beach worshippers or private pool people; flashionistas or barefoot luxury lovers.

So have a look at some of our favourite Maldives properties, and then email us on [email protected] or call (01) 646 4158092 for advice on how to decipher the mysteries of the Maldives.

Baros Maldives Embracing the "essence of the Maldives", this picture-perfect gem of an island offers an intimate getaway focused on subtle service and classic style. Dining here is an event, particularly at the architecturally stunning Lighthouse restaurant, with its iconic white tented roof, where the chef shines with multiple degustation menus that can compete with some of the finest Michelin-starred restaurants. There's a real focus here on the bespoke - whether in the little service touches and surprises, the private dining options available at any location of your choice - including on a stunning sandbank that is reachable only at high-tide, and "diving by design" - enhanced by Baros's vibrant house reef that is truly one of the best in the Maldives.  For some, another bonus is the resort's no-child policy, making Baros one of the most romantic hideaways in the Maldives.

Maalifushi by Como Perfect for those looking for a quintessential Robin Crusoe escape, Maalifushi is a tropical gem in the pristine Thaa Atoll - a brief plane ride away from the international airport. It is Como's second property in the Maldives - but where beloved Cocoa Island tends to be a romantic haven for couples, this new property features an array of diversions that suit a wider audience - including a Como Shambhala spa, a wonderful kids' club (Play by Como), and amazing reefs for snorkeling and diving, as well as being a renowned haven for surf enthusiasts. With a fresh and eco-friendly approach, Maalifushi is pure barefoot luxury.

Niyama by Per Aquum The younger, larger little sister of fashionable Huvafen Fushi (another Remote Lands favourite), Niyama by Per Aquum provides a refreshing twist on traditional Maldivian beach stays. A lot of creativity and out-of-the box thinking went into creating this tropical haven - from Subsix, the underwater playground for adults; to an array of boys' toys including a sport simulator, kite surfing, and sea-bobbing; to the inventive approach to dining - including tribal campfires and sinful  underwater champagne breakfasts. Located on Olhuveli Island in the Dhaalu Atoll, the resort is reachable by seaplane, providing an extraordinary bird's-eye view of the stunning jeweled Maldivian islands below as you fly by. Perfect for honeymoons and family travel, cool Niyama promises to energize and elate.

Velassaru Trendy and hip, Velassaru's wow factor is its stunning white powder beach and turquoise lagoon. Its youthful vibe makes the resort a fun getaway for honeymooners and couples.  Another major draw here is the wide selection of restaurants and bars - seven altogether - providing a level of dining diversity that is quite unique for a hotel of it size. Only a 25-minute speedboat ride from the airport in South Male Atoll, the resort is a "Small Leading Hotel of the World" and is one of the more affordable five-star luxury properties in the Maldives.
