Rason

Rason is a North Korean city positioned in the Kwanbuk region, on the northeasternmost tip of the country, on the coast of the Sea of Japan. It was previously known as Rajin-Sŏnbonga and the Japanese referred to it as Rashin during their occupation. Owing to its location, sharing borders with China and Russia, at the end of an important railway line for trade and with its warm water port, Rason has always been a city of interest to nearby countries and, with its status of governance switching from being provincially-controlled to being a "special" city, Rason has historically enjoyed perhaps more foreign influence than most other North Korean cities, and as such is well worth a visit with many sites of interest including the only port in North Korea open to international visitors. Visitors enjoy exploring the city, its markets, museums and galleries, as well as the surrounding areas of natural beauty including beaches and islands with clear waters and abundant wildlife.
