Perfect Combinations: Travel Destinations that Go Well Together

17 August 2023

As coffee goes with cream, and caviar complements Champagne, some countries combine perfectly on a single Asian journey. Mostly this is to do with physical proximity, but it’s also logistics including ease of flights and land border crossings. But the following unions are as notable for their differences in culture and diversity of experiences as they are for convenience.

PERFECT COMBINATIONS: TRAVEL DESTINATIONS THAT GO WELL TOGETHER

SPARKLE IN SOUTH ASIA

Nanuoya Waterfall

Few combinations are more paradisiacal than Sri Lanka and The Maldives. Sri Lanka, with its tropical bounty of jungle-clad mountains and tumbling waterfalls, is as stunning as any place on earth. The nation is blessed with plenty of cultural substance in addition to its visual attributes, with ancient and colonial history and architecture to investigate and wildlife to observe, all while staying in five-star hotels. A short hop away is The Maldives, an archipelago that offers remarkable resorts with white sand beaches and overwater pool villas and world class diving. Fly in on Emirates or Etihad and include a stopover in Dubai and Abu Dhabi for a triumvirate of contrasting experiences.

TO THE POWER OF THREE IN THE CAUCASUS

Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of north-eastern Georgia.

Sandwiched by the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, the three countries comprising the Caucasus are a travel fantasy come to life. Located at a crossroads between Europe and Asia, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan offer a spellbinding array of experiences that span ancient history, stunning scenery, and forays into viticulture, gastronomy, and hip urban culture. Although they are very different in character and feel, the three countries share a compact footprint on the world map. What’s more, the tight geography makes the area relatively easy to travel around by private car and crossing land borders.

REACHING HIMALAYAN HEIGHTS

Annapurna Trek

Nepal and Bhutan offer two sides of a Himalayan coin. Nepal has some of the headline attractions in the region, including — of course — the treks to Mt. Everest and Annapurna base camps. Other highlights include the Kathmandu Valley, the cradle of ancient Hindu and Buddhist civilizations with myriad UNESCO World Heritage architecture. Bhutan is just a short flight from Nepal but a world away in so many ways. This serene Himalayan Kingdom has a benevolent royal family and ancient traditions  including their unique architecture style and wearing their national costumes and that distinguish them from their neighbors. Stay in the luxurious Amankora, COMO and Six Senses lodges for maximum comfort.

FROM THE LION CITY TO THE ISLAND OF THE GODS

Marina Bay Sands and ArtScience Museum

Small and perfectly formed (and ordered), Singapore is a world class financial city and much more than a layover destination. The tiny island nation which was once a British colony - and everyone speaks fluent English - punches above its size for many reasons. Art lovers from all over the world flock to Singapore’s  art fairs, fine museums and galleries like the National Gallery Singapore and the ArtScience Museum. Gastronomes devour its remarkable food culture with a melting pot of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and western cuisines including 56 Michelin star restaurants. Singapore Airlines and its home in Changi Airport  consistently win awards for best in class, and it is also a hub for international air travel, making it the perfect jumping off point for nearby destinations such as Bali and all of Indonesia.

TWIN PEAKS IN THE FAR EAST

Seoraksan National Park

Japan and Korea are, of course, vastly different - but their historical similarities and special quirks mean they complement each other well. The two countries are renowned for their unique and delicious cuisines, vibrant youth culture, teeming, multi-faceted cities, and incredible natural beauty. Any time of year is good for visiting, but the two countries are especially appealing during cherry blossom in the spring and the during fall foliage which rivals that of New England. We love a combination of urban, small town and rural destinations, staying in skyscraper hotels such as Aman Tokyo and Four Seasons Seoul as well as traditional ryokans and small luxury properties in remote corners of Japan from southwestern Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu and Hokkaido.
