Remote and rugged, the northernmost section of Laos deserves its reputation as one of the last remaining frontiers in Southeast Asia. Those who venture here will find some of the most breathtaking scenery in Laos and some of the best opportunities in the country to interact with various local hill tribes. Emerald green tracts of forested mountains such as Nam Ha NPA (National Protected Area), easily accessible from Luang Namtha, a regional capital with an airport, offer some of the best trekking in Asia. For something even more off the beaten track, head further north to Phongsali. Close to the border with Yunnan, China, this far-flung outpost offers vivid glimpses of Chinese culture, as well as stunning lanscapes. Complementing the region's physical attributes is its fascinating ethnic diversity. Land borders have never counted for much in this part of Asia, and the area has long been a natural path of immigration for a wide variety of peoples.
