WE LOVE LAOS

ONE OF SOUTHEAST ASIA'S MOST COMPELLING
DESTINATIONS IS BACK IS OPEN

With its pristine nature and uniquely relaxed atmosphere, Laos is the perfect antidote to the pandemic era. With the country freshly reopened to international travel, visitors can experience everything from golden sunsets to palatial architecture to the cultures of a mosaic of ethnic peoples. In popular destinations such as the royal city of Luang Prabang and the compact capital of Vientiane, restaurants, cafes, and bars are indicative of an evolving destination. Elsewhere, life carries on much as it has for centuries in the mist-shrouded valleys of the north and the multi-faceted landscapes of the south.

Laos is open to vaccinated travelers without quarantine.

ROYAL AND REVERED

Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang

Nestled at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, amidst a lush backdrop of jungle-clad mountains, Luang Prabang is one of Southeast Asia’s jewels. Saffron-robed monks collecting their daily alms and remarkably ornate temples such as Wat Xieng Thong offer spiritual solace. Chic cafes and lavish resorts such as Amantaka and Rosewood Luang Prabang provide unparalleled comfort. A string of open-air bars line the Mekong River offering convivial libations in a breathtaking setting. Most of Luang Prabang's cultural wonders such as its royal palaces and ornate temples remain extant, earning the city Unesco World Heritage status. Other draws include Wat Tham Phou Si, which offers incredible sunset views over the city towards the mountains from its hilltop position.

SOUTHERN COMFORTS

Wat Phou, Champasak

From the limestone karsts and dense forests of the Phou Hin Boun NPA (National Protected Area) to the coffee plantations and roaring waterfalls of the lush Bolaven Plateaux, southern Laos is prime territory for guests who relish deviating from the beaten path. Here travelers can enjoy the familiar laid-back pace of life in Laos and a good spot to indulge in such a recharge is Si Phan Don. Better known as the 4000 Islands, this riverine archipelago offers palm-fringed islands set against a lazy and winding section of the Mekong. The beautiful island of Don Daeng, directly opposite Champasak town, is ideal for exploration by bicycle and is close to Wat Phou, a UNESCO-listed pre-Angkorian temple that is arguably the most impressive religious relic in Laos.

EXPLORE THE NORTH

A woman from the Akha Ghepia minority group, Phongsali

Remote and rugged, the northernmost section of Laos deserves its reputation as one of the last remaining frontiers in Southeast Asia. Those who venture here will find some of the most breathtaking scenery in Laos and some of the best opportunities in the country to interact with various local hill tribes. Emerald green tracts of forested mountains such as Nam Ha NPA (National Protected Area), easily accessible from Luang Namtha, a regional capital with an airport, offer some of the best trekking in Asia. For something even more off the beaten track, head further north to Phongsali. Close to the border with Yunnan, China, this far-flung outpost offers vivid glimpses of Chinese culture, as well as stunning lanscapes. Complementing the region's physical attributes is its fascinating ethnic diversity. Land borders have never counted for much in this part of Asia, and the area has long been a natural path of immigration for a wide variety of peoples.
