Mongolia is high, cold, and windy. It has an extreme continental climate with long, cold winters and short summers, during which most of its annual precipitation falls. Known as the ‘land of blue skies, the country averages over 250 cloudless days a year. The winter lasting November to February is extremely cold, with January averages dropping as low as minus 30 °C (minus 22 °F).A vast front of cold air comes in from Siberia in winter and collects in river valleys and low basins causing very cold temperatures while slopes of mountains actually are a little warmer. As a general rule only the very hardiest of travelers brave Mongolia in the depths of winter, though it can be done.
