SUMBA: THE ENIGMATIC ISLAND

Cap Karoso Village

Sumba offers a glimpse into Indonesia's lesser-known side, courtesy of the island’s rugged landscapes, ancient traditions, and unspoiled beauty. Its distinctive topography, characterized by rolling savannahs and limestone hills, sets it apart from its neighbors. Visitors can explore traditional villages nestled amidst verdant landscapes, where ancient customs and rituals thrive. Sumba's coastline is adorned with pristine white sand beaches and dramatic cliffs, offering breathtaking views and world-class surfing opportunities. NIHI Sumba, a luxurious hideaway, provides discerning travelers with a secluded retreat from which to explore this enchanting island paradise. Recent years have seen several new resorts open their doors. Cap Karoso, on Sumba’s remote western tip, is among the most ambitious additions and its sleek design and facilities make for a brilliant beach break with a heavy helping of local culture. Also wowing guests is Alamayah, which strikes a balance between luxurious, heartfelt hospitality and connectedness with the landscape and local culture.

KOMODO: A JOURNEY INTO THE WILD BLUE

Komodo dragon

Komodo National Park is a paradise for nature lovers, serious divers and adventure seekers alike. Its pristine waters and stunning seascapes provide the perfect backdrop for exploration and discovery during the summer months. Travelers can embark on unforgettable sailing adventures aboard charming “phinisi” schooners, cruising through turquoise waters and exploring hidden coves and deserted beaches. The hand-crafted ironwood and teak vessels combine the traditional phinisi hull architecture with the “mod cons” of a Western yacht to create a stylish onboard experience for cruising some of Indonesia's most stunning seascapes. Phinisis can be chartered for private group hire, adding to the feeling of personalized exclusivity. On land, Komodo National Park is home to the famous Komodo Dragons, the world's largest lizards, as well as a diverse array of wildlife and marine creatures. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts will delight in the park's vibrant coral reefs and crystal-clear waters, teeming with colorful fish and other marine life.

RAJA AMPAT, THE SPICE ISLANDS AND PAPUA: BRIMFUL OF EASTERN PROMISE

Aqua Blu

The eastern fringes of the Indonesian archipelago are among the country’s most beautiful, with the seascapes around Raja Ampat, West Papua and the Malaku (Spice) Islands ripe for amazing voyages and notably are amongst the world’s top dive sites. The best time to visit this part of the country is during its dry period, which runs from October to April, the opposite of Komodo and most of Indonesia. Travelers can enhance their exploration of the region aboard the ultra-luxe Aqua Blu 15-cabin luxury cruise ship. The Spice Islands have long held a fascination for renowned explorers of the Old World, including Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan. The island of Run - where rare spices like nutmeg and cloves were grown and valued more highly than gold due to their medicinal value - was famously traded for Manhattan in 1667 by the Dutch. Now, travelers journeying through the Banda region can uncover a treasure trove of colonial relics and Dutch fortresses dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Raja Ampat, meanwhile, stands as an undeniable jewel among the world's most breathtaking island chains. Its allure lies in its towering jungle-covered islands, pristine white-sand beaches, hidden lagoons, mysterious caves, unique mushroom-shaped islets, and crystalline turquoise waters.

BALI: FETED ISLAND OF THE GODS

Nusa Penida

Renowned for its exquisite natural beauty and rich Hindu/Animist heritage, Bali is popular year round, but the dry season summer from late May to September is the best time to visit. While its signature beach club-vibes pervade in the south, elsewhere, guests can immerse themselves in cultural delights like temple dances and traditional Balinese remedies and treatments, or take in iconic landscapes from rice paddies to the rugged cliffs of Nusa Penida. Ubud stands out as a cultural and artistic hub, offering a serene and spiritual ambiance intertwined with Balinese traditions, along with a thriving culinary scene. Bali boasts an array of exceptional resorts, with notable mentions including Amankila, Amandari, Bill Bensley-designed Capella Ubud, the open-air Banyan Tree Buahan and the new Jumeirah in Uluwatu. Bali’s undeveloped sister island of Lombok is also recommended for visitors seeking a more off-the-beaten-path destination, and trekkers can hike Indonesia’s second-highest mountain, Rinjani, crowned with a crystalline crater lake.
