Feeding the buffalo bananas in Luang Prabang

Nestled at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, amidst a stirring backdrop of jungle-clad mountains, Luang Prabang is undoubtedly the main draw card in Laos. And it’s a place that can be savored by young and old alike. There are numerous cool family-orientated activities in and around Luang Prabang. Early risers can meet saffron-robed monks collecting their daily alms at sunrise. Popular day trips — from properties such as Amantaka and Rosewood — include a visit to the Kuang Si Waterfall, a succession of falls, and crystalline jungle pools, as well as a visit to an ethical elephant sanctuary. ANCIENT APPELLATIONS

The grape harvest, Kakheti Wine Region

Georgia is an underrated destination for families. And it comes into its own as a place where kids can discover the country's deep-seated culture while having a (wine) barrel of laughs during the Rtveli wine harvesting festival. Georgia is known as the cradle of wine and has viticultural traditions that can be traced back to 6000 BC. Accordingly, Rtveli is one of the most eagerly anticipated and joyously celebrated calendar events in the country. It’s about more than just drinking wine — although adults won’t be short of opportunities to savor a glass or two. It also marks the process of picking grapes, processing them into juice, and starting the fermentation process to make wine, offering plenty of scope for fun activities like grape stomping with local families.

HOI AN’S CATCH OF THE DAY

The basket boats of Hoi An

Alongside ao dai (national dress), and conical hats, the circular fishing boats that crowd the foreshore along Vietnam’s long coastline are iconic of the Southeast Asian country. And embarking on a morning fishing trip on one of these thung chai or “basket boats” is a family-friendly highlight of a visit to Hoi An, one of the country’s most charming destinations. As the story goes, the French arrived in Vietnam and began imposing heavy taxes, including on the ownership of boats. Most of the poor Vietnamese fishermen who depended on boats for their livelihood could not afford to pay the taxes, so they invented the thung chai, which could be disguised as simple baskets if pesky colonial tax inspectors checked by. A morning fishing trip gives families the chance to witness this unique part of Vietnamese seafaring culture firsthand before concluding the experience with a traditional fisherman’s breakfast prepared by the chef, Captain Cook. Remote Lands recommends staying at the Four Seasons Nam Hai while in Hoi An.
