TIME FOR TOCHIGI

Toshogu Shrine

Tochigi Prefecture packs a lot into its relatively small dimensions. In fact, it is a treasure trove of natural beauty and fascinating history and culture. Within its pristine forests, majestic cedar trees frame a collection of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. Highlights of Nikko, the main city, include the UNESCO-listed Toshogu Shrine which abounds with intricate carvings, vibrant hues, and a profound historical significance. Tradition meets modern comfort at the impressive Fufu Nikko hotel. One of the best ways to travel between Tokyo and Tochigi is on the new Spacia X train. Connecting Tokyo to Tochigi, this hyper-modern railway experience provides luxuriously-appointed cabins with sofas and lounge-style seating from where travelers can enjoy the panoramic views of this captivating region during the journey. Accommodation options include the classically minimalist The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko, a serene hot spring resort on the Lake Chuzenji, surrounded by the verdant foliage of Nikko National Park.

OSAKA’S EARTHY APPETIZERS

Osaka Castle

Down-to-earth Osaka, Japan’s third largest city, is one of the country’s most compelling conurbations. Indeed, its lively atmosphere and down-to-earth, friendly inhabitants make it a worthy rival to cities such as Kyoto and Tokyo. Indeed, its proximity to Kyoto make the two cities a natural pairing. An amazing food scene that birthed Japanese classics such as okonomiyaki (savory pancake) and takoyaki (octopus balls) doesn’t hurt either. These morsels — and many others—can be sampled on a street food sojourn in the Dotonbori area. Osaka’s culinary traditions can also be uncovered at Cupnoodles Museum, dedicated to the instant noodles and its creator and founder, where you can craft your own cup noodles. Throw some of the friendliest locals into the recipe and you see why Osakans make such a strong claim for their metropolis. Accommodation options include the gleaming Conrad Osaka in the heart of the central Kita district. Our tip? Catch a professional baseball game for the authentic local experience.

OKINAWA’S TURN TO SHINE

HOSHINOYA Okinawa

A previously overlooked destination that is enjoying its time in the sun (literally) is Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture, which consists of 150 islands known for its subtropical climate, broad golden beaches, and coral reefs. Intriguing WW2 sites offer a historical counterbalance to southerly islands sun-kissed beach vibes, and we certainly have our eye on one of Japan’s most appealing new resorts in the shape of HOSHINOYA Okinawa. A modernist island retreat designed the concept of "gusuku estate" (a type of stone-wall castle or fortress found in the Ryukyu Islands), HOSHINOYA Okinawa hugs a remote and scenic stretch of the East China Sea shore, and offers the same focus on wellness the brand is acclaimed for.

SOMETHING SPIRITUAL

Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage

The Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage, a tradition spanning over a millennium, holds significance for various religious communities in Japan, being equally sacred to followers of Shinto and Buddhist. The journey leads to the three shrines of Kumano Hongu, Kumano Hayatama, and Kumano Nachi, located in an area adorned with rejuvenating Japanese onsen. Accommodation options typically included guesthouses for pilgrams along the trail and a scattering of small ryokans with onsens, although several upscale resorts are now available farther from the trail — transfer to and from which we will arrange for you at your leisure. Remote Lands can also arrange a shukubo (temple stay) on Mt. Koya for those seeking a deeper experience.  Regardless of your spiritual inclinations, embarking on this journey promises an enriching experience to be cherished.
