QUITE THE HIKE:

HERE’S OUR SELECTION OF SOME OF THE BEST DAY-TRAILS IN ASIA

Asia is replete with epic hikes. From the Annapurna Circuit to Japan’s amazing long-distance trails, there are numerous options for extended walking expeditions in the region. But there are equally incredible options for those who prefer to condense their hiking into a shorter timeframe. From a pilgrimage up Fuji-san to an encounter with the world’s most acidic lake, we’ve selected a few of our favorites.

MOUNT FUJI, JAPAN

A sea of clouds at the summit of Mt.Fuji

One of the most iconic peaks on the planet, Mount Fuji is familiar even to those who have never set foot in Japan. And its proximity to major cities like Tokyo and Yokohama make it one of the most accessible of the world’s great mountains for casual hikers. And with an estimated 300,000 people scaling it during the annual summer climbing season (typically July through early September) don’t expect splendid isolation. The climb up to Japan’s highest summit is not especially difficult, even for beginners. The most popular climbing route is the Yoshida Trail. It takes five to six hours to hit the top and around three to descend plus 1.5 hours for circling the crater at the top. For accommodation near the mountain try the FuFu Kawaguchiko.

JABAL AKHDAR, OMAN

Diana Viewpoint, Jabal Akhdar

Located in the heart of the jagged Hajar range which extends through the UAE and northern Oman, Jebel Akhdar is famously abundant. Translated from Arabic as ‘Green Mountain’, the peak — the loftiest in Oman — is famous for its labyrinth of wadis and terraced orchards, where pomegranates, apricots and roses grow freely. Indeed, it’s lush slopes and myriad trails make it ideal for several day hikes. On the W18b trek, you’ll hike from the village of Al Aqor to Sayq, passing through the settlements of Al Ayn and Ash Shirayjah along the way. Expect a pleasant walk on an old trail that involves some steep stone steps as you walk by old stone houses, alongside narrow irrigation channels and through leafy orchards that offer respite from the sun. Top accommodation options nearby include Anantara Al Jabal Akhdar and Alila Jabal Akhdar.

MOUNT IJEN, INDONESIA

Aerial view of Ijen's crater and sulphurous pool The string of volcanoes that extend along Indonesia offer some of the world’s most elemental mountain scenery. And a prime example of this is Kawah Ijen. Located in the far east of Java, this complex of volcanoes has a variety of features that make it unique. The most famous of these is its crater lake: the most acidic body of water in the world. Its turquoise color makes it endlessly photogenic, just don’t be tempted to dip your toe in. Other characteristic quirks of the trek include witnessing the sulphur mining operation near the summit and the fact that you’ll need a gas mask (available at the mountain) to negotiate the fumes from the sulphur at the top. Most climbers start the hike just before dawn to get to the crater by first light. The trail is a bit rough and steep at times, but — at just a couple of hours long — it’s not especially difficult.

JOMSOM, NEPAL

Trekking Kali Gandaki Valley

Stretching north from the Annapurna range towards Tibet, Mustang is one of Nepal’s most unique regions. Indeed, with its high-altitude desert landscapes and procession of Buddhist chortens (stupas), you could be forgiven for thinking you’d passed by the border crossing into Nepal’s northern neighbor without realizing. The main gateway to this magical corner of the Himalayas is Jomsom, which is cut off in two halves by the Kali Gandaki: the deepest gorge in the world. This area is now home to Shinta Mani Mustang – a Bensley Collection, the Nepal debut for Thailand-based American hotel designer Bill Bensley. There are several intriguing day hike possibilities from Jomsom including the trek to Marpha, a pretty town watered by paved canals and surrounded by green orchards.

JUTA, GEORGIA

A Remote Lands' guide wanders Juta Valley

One of the highlights of Georgia is a day excursion from the town of Kazbegi to the village of Juta. At an altitude of around 2200 meters, Juta is one of the highest settlements in Europe. In fact, it’s inaccessible for much of the year. From Juta village, it’s possible to do a great hike into the Chaukhi mountains with the trail offering widescreen views of the mountains. The end point for the trail is beautiful Chaukhi lake, right before the Chaukhi Pass, which connects the Kazbegi region with Khevsureti. The best accommodation near Juta is the Hotel Rooms in Kazbegi, where rooms open up onto sweeping panoramic views of Mount Kazbeg and Gergeti Trinity Church.
