Why You Should Dedicate an Entire Journey to Cambodia
Cambodia is one of Remote Lands’ most popular destinations, yet typically as part of a multi-country journey through Indochina. That is beginning to change with so many new luxury destinations opening around the Khmer kingdom, well beyond Siem Reap’s ancient temples including the magnificent Angkor Wat.
WHY YOU SHOULD DEDICATE
AN ENTIRE JOURNEY TO CAMBODIA
Cambodia is one of Remote Lands’ most popular destinations, yet typically as part of a multi-country journey through Indochina. That is beginning to change with so many new luxury destinations opening around the Khmer kingdom, well beyond Siem Reap’s ancient temples including the magnificent Angkor Wat. With Cambodia’s range of experiences from city to jungle to tropical island becoming increasingly compelling, there is every reason to fly long-haul just to visit the Khmer kingdom.
Several of our Aman Jet Expeditions — in partnership with Aman — include Cambodia in 2022. Find the schedule and all the details here.
Cambodia is open to vaccinated travelers without quarantine.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY THE UNDERAPPRECIATED CAPITALWith its tragic modern history sliding out of focus, there is a buzz about Phnom Penh again, Cambodia’s endearing and authentic capital, which has been overshadowed by Siem Reap for the past two decades. Phnom Penh reminds us of both Saigon and Bangkok at varying points of their history over the past two decades.
Foodies will note that the underrated Khmer cuisine is having a cultural ‘moment’ in the capital, with excellent new restaurants, coffee shops and craft distilleries, many of which are within walking distance of the ultra-modern Rosewood. History-enthusiasts may appreciate the lingering French influences and profound memorials to the Khmer Rouge era, while travelers who prefer a slow-paced journey should consider taking the boutique Aqua Mekong to the Unesco Biosphere Reserve, Tonle Sap.
THE TEMPLES AND BEYOND With reduced visitors to Cambodia over the current period, there is an incomparable opportunity to explore Angkor Wat sans the crowds. Your Remote Lands’ guide will whisk you in through the lesser-known southern gate for an intimate and atmospheric introduction to Southeast Asia’s greatest treasure. But we encourage you to go deeper. Explore the iconic Ta Phrom, half reclaimed by jungle, and the ornate Banteay Srei, possibly the finest example of Angkorian architecture. Take a helicopter to remote Koh Ker (pictured), and a motorcycle into the hills of Phnom Kulen National Park in search of the “Valley of a Thousand Lingas”. In the evenings retreat to peaceful Amansara, a former residence of King Sihanouk. THE RAINFOREST RETREATIncluded in The Gold List 2022 – as one of the best resorts in the world – by the editorial team at Condé Nast Traveler, Bill Bensley’s Shinta Mani Wild reflects both the designer’s wild creativity and passion for conservation. Immersed in the Cardamom Mountains National Park, this series of 15 ultra-luxe safari tents strikes the right balance between joie de vivre and serious wildlife protection with ziplining and nightly waterfall-side soireés complementing Wildlife Alliance-led poacher tracking missions.
In Remote Lands’ view, Shinta Mani Wild is one of the few properties that lives up to its billing as a destination in and of itself. In trying to do something different, they have created another compelling reason to visit Cambodia.
THE PRIVATE ISLANDProving that you don’t need to leave the country for a truly world-class private island experience, Song Saa is a serene twin-island resort in Cambodia’s corner of the Gulf of Thailand, the perfect setting to conclude any Cambodia sojourn. We love both the Ocean View and Overwater Villas (with private plunge pools) here, with the latter having glass floor areas for viewing the sea life below. Like Shinta Mani Wild, Song Saa takes conservation seriously with their own foundation dedicated to protecting marine life around the islands, as well as helping local communities. Guests can even help plant coral reefs, while naturally the resort is an ideal choice for snorkelers and divers.
OPEN WITHOUT QUARANTINE Vaccinated travelers can travel to any of these destinations right now.
