Temperatures almost constantly remain between 27 and 32 °C (81-90 °F), and long sleeves are useful in the middle of the day for those prone to sunburn. This is also typhoon season and rainfall is often over 120 mm per day. For the uninitiated such intense weather can be is an awesome spectacle, the city turning a dark slate-gray in mere seconds. Many use the season to cool down and ignore the heat by swimming at many of the regions hidden beaches. Early June and it is time for Dragon Boat Festival, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, when local and visitors take to the water to watch fiercely-competitive international boat races, while snacking on festival foodzongzi, rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves.
