It is monsoon season in Laos between May and September with rains regularly hitting over 200 mm. April, May and June regularly reach over 35°C (95 °F), so it is an ideal time to head for the slightly cooler climes of the hilly north, the picturesque town of Luang Prabang being a favored base to explore the surrounding area. The monsoons see an already green country burst into ever more vibrant shades of green, and hundreds of waterfalls across the country come alive. Laos is much loved by travelers to South East Asia who find the relentless hustle and bustle of neighboring Thailand and Vietnam a bit much and want a gentler, quieter, and more leisurely trip. Even the capital itself rarely gets above village pace.
