Myanmar in September

June through September is rainy season Myanmar, and it gets very wet with temperatures still hot, though a little cooler, between 22 and 31 °C (72 – 88 °F). In Yangon in July rainfall hits nearly 400mm, which sees longer downpours in the afternoons as it is situated on the southern coast. Some regions become inaccessible, and Ngapali Beach, the nation’s finest, closes in preparation for the high winds and heavy rainfall that batter the coast, but you can still travel to key places, such as Yangon, Mandalay, Inle Lake and Bagan. The rains, however, do bring the country to life as lush green vegetation emerges throughout. The rain tends to come in short sharp bursts in the afternoon and early evening, so travel is fine, especially with an umbrella to hand.

Recommended Festivals & Events For Myanmar in September

The day before the full moon, young women from the surrounding villages bring offerings of fruits and cakes to the Manuha Pagoda and the men march in a grand carnival procession with paper statues of gods and animals. During the evening there are traditional performances and in the morning, monks are invited and presented with alms.

Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda lies in the middle of the Inle Lake and is home to five gold leaf-covered statues of Buddha. Every year, four of the Buddhas are placed in the royal barge which is led by boats driven by leg-rowers. The barge procession visits the surrounding villages and the statues are housed in the monasteries overnight.
