December to February is winter in rugged and little-traveled Tajikistan, when it is cold and wet. Temperatures usually hover between zero and 10 °C (50°F) in Danshube, the capital, with average rainfall of 20 mm, though the eastern Pamirs are significantly colder and wetter, with the average January temperature minus 15 to minus 20 °C (minus 4 to 5 °F). The Fergana Valley and other lowlands are shielded from the Arctic air by mountains, but temperatures in that region still drop below freezing for most of this time. As a general rule the higher you go the colder it gets, so people prefer the cities in winter and mountains in summer. For those looking to travel the famed Pamir highway beware that it is blocked at this time due to heavy snowfall in the region
