Bardia National Park

Bardia National Park is the largest protected natural area in Terai, tucked into the southwest corner of Nepal. This sub-tropical area features vast forested and grassland areas that have been protected from both human settlements and resource extraction since the park formed in 1988. It is home to a great number of species, including rhinoceros, elephants, and tigers, and has, long since it opened, enticed those adventure seekers and nature lovers looking for a safari away from traditional tourist destinations. The park sits on the eastern bank of the Karnali River, near the Indian border. Visitors can arrive by the Nepalgunj-Surkhet highway, which forms part of the southern boundary of the park, and ease gracefully into their enchanting jungle adventure.

Experiences

A handpicked selection of experiences endorsed by our experts. If you can’t see what you’re looking for, let us know, as our extensive network of local contacts can open many doors.

Bird Watching

In addition to an incredible number of mammals, Bardia National Park is home to over 400 unique bird species, including the white-rumped vulture and the bar-headed geese. To get the most out of the experience of bird-watching in the park, guests are advised to bring their binoculars and guidebooks: this is serious business for serious bird-watchers!

Elephant Ride

If the best way to experience a place is from the perspective of a native, why not let an elephant lead the way? Guests can have the chance to cross an item off their bucket-list and take a ride on an elephant through the park, observing the world around from atop one of the largest mammals.

Jeep Safari

With so many exotic mammals living in the protected wildlife area, no one can go wrong with a good old-fashioned jeep safari. Guests can zip around the 374 squared miles of the park to see elephants, tigers, rhinoceros, and many other mammals in their natural habitat.

Jungle Walk

It might not provide as much mileage as a jeep safari, but a jungle walk is a great way for guests to get up-close and personal with the vast varieties of flora and fauna that flourish in Bardia National Park. Visitors may even trek to the observation tower in the park to check it all out from above.

Rafting

For the thrill-seeking guests, the Rapti River provides an excellent opportunity to raft through the park. If they are lucky, guests will also have the chance to observe animals taking a drink or bath – including the crocodiles that often line the riverbed.

Village Tour

Just outside the boundaries of the park is the Tharu Village, home to the Tharu people, an identified nation by the Government of Nepal. Guests can spend some time with the people of this village, learning about life in the foothills of the Himalayas and experiencing the tribe’s different customs for themselves.
