CAMBODIA’S AWESOME RODENTS

APOPO HeroRATs

Cambodia's devastating civil war bequeathed the country with a horrifying legacy, part of which has been its heavily mined countryside. The nation is on a path towards clearing its unexploded ordinance. And animals are aiding in these efforts via APOPO, a Belgian non-profit organization, that has pioneered an innovative method for landmine clearance: using rats. Specifically, they employ Southern giant pouched rats, which undergo extensive training to detect the scent of TNT with remarkable accuracy. By alerting their handlers to the presence of landmines in the field, these heroic rodents play a crucial role in enhancing safety during demining operations. Due to their lightweight, the rats do not trigger the pressure mechanisms of the landmines, ensuring a safer process for both the rats and the human handlers. At the Visitor Center, guests can partake in tours, witness demonstrations of the rats' training exercises, and engage in conversations with the courageous individuals dedicated to making the Cambodian countryside free from the threat of anti-personnel mines.

SWIMMING WITH GIANTS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Whale sharks in the Philippines

The underwater world holds incredible potential for thrilling encounters, and one of the most exciting is swimming with whale sharks. These massive creatures, reaching lengths of up to 40 feet, are the largest fish in the sea. Despite their size, they are gentle giants that pose no threat to humans, feeding mainly on plankton and small fish. You don't need to be a certified diver to experience the thrill of swimming alongside whale sharks. These placid creatures often feed close to the water's surface, allowing for interactions through snorkeling or even from the deck of a boat.

Donsol Bay in the Bicol region of southeast Luzon, Philippines, is renowned for its remarkable whale shark interactions. From November to May, the world's possibly largest school of whale sharks migrates here to feed on the abundant plankton and krill. Strict regulations are in place to protect the creatures and their natural habitat. The experience is not guaranteed, as the whale sharks are not captive, and local fishermen do not feed them.

ENGAGING WITH ELEPHANTS IN NORTHERN THAILAND

Four Seasons Tented Camp

One of the highlights of the scenic Mae Taeng Valley north of Chiang Mai, Elephant Nature Park is special on multiple levels. Established back in 1995 as a sanctuary and rescue center for pachyderms working in riding camps and the logging industries, the facility has extensive experience in elephant welfare. The elephants here no longer work for humans and are allowed to roam free within the park. This selling point makes it a fantastic place for visitors to get an insight into the problems facing Asian elephants and how their lives can be improved. Throughout a day-long itinerary, guests will learn more about the fantastic beasts, as well as the changes advocated by the park regarding their care, treatment, and training. Elephant Nature Park deploys a hands-on approach, and visitors are encouraged to join the park's volunteers to feed and bathe the animals.

ON THE TRAIL OF THE SNOW LEOPARD IN LADAKH

Snow Leopard hunting in the snow

Ladakh has earned its reputation as India's ultimate frontier, and it's not hard to see why. During the harsh winter months from November to May, the region becomes largely isolated from the rest of the world, creating an enchanting and otherworldly atmosphere. One of Ladakh's most distinctive features is its population of snow leopards, adding to its allure as a wildlife haven. Although spotting these elusive creatures can be challenging, Ladakh offers some of the best opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts. For those eager to catch a glimpse of these shy big cats, the Snow Leopard Lodge in the picturesque village of Ulley provides an unparalleled experience, immersing visitors in the quest to encounter these majestic animals firsthand.
