Sri Lanka & The Maldives: The Perfect Pairing for this Winter
There are worse ways to end a year than with a trip to South Asia. Close neighbors yet strikingly different in character, Sri Lanka and the Maldives make natural partners for a festive escape. The former rewards curiosity with ancient cities, wildlife, tea-clad mountains, and historic towns, while the latter provides the ultimate full stop: a few blissful days surrounded by little but turquoise water and tropical sky.
FROM ANCIENT KINGDOMS TO ISLAND SHORES
Close neighbors yet strikingly different in character, Sri Lanka and the Maldives make natural partners for a festive journey. Begin among ancient cities, wildlife-rich plains, and lush tea-clad highlands, then cross the Indian Ocean to a heavenly private island where the pace slows almost completely. It is a journey built on contrast: days of discovery and depth in Sri Lanka followed by a Maldives finale that can be as unhurried or as active as you choose, with exceptional diving, snorkeling, sailing, and watersports in the clear, coral-rich waters.
ANCIENT BEGINNINGS
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
From Colombo, the journey heads inland to the Cultural Triangle, where many of the island’s greatest historical treasures are concentrated within a remarkably compact area. Sigiriya provides the most dramatic introduction. Rising sheer above the surrounding plains, the ancient rock fortress is one of Sri Lanka’s defining sights, its summit reached via a vertiginous climb past the remains of an extraordinary royal complex.
From here, continue to Polonnaruwa, the island’s medieval capital, where palaces, temples, and monumental Buddha statues hint at the power of the Sinhalese kingdoms. History shares the stage with wildlife nearby, with an elephant safari offering the chance to see herds moving through the forests and grasslands of Sri Lanka’s north-central plains. The UNESCO-listed cave temples at Dambulla provide another cultural highlight before the journey turns south toward Kandy.
INTO THE HILLS

Cradled among forested hills, Kandy provides a bridge between Sri Lanka’s ancient heartlands and its high country. Its spiritual centerpiece is the Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites.
From Kandy, continue into the central highlands, where the air cools and tea estates spread across mist-covered slopes. Deep in the Bogawantalawa Valley, days at Ceylon Tea Trails unfold amid historic planter’s bungalows, rolling estates, and cool mountain air, with opportunities to hike through the hills and learn how the leaves grown on these slopes become world-famous Ceylon tea.
THE WILD SOUTH

From the cool highlands, the journey turns south toward Yala National Park, where scrub, forest, wetlands, and grasslands support some of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated wildlife. Set out on safari in search of leopards, elephants, and abundant birdlife, adding another dimension to a journey already rich in history and landscape.
Continue west to Galle, whose UNESCO-listed fort was first established by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later extensively developed by the Dutch. Within its ramparts, colonial-era buildings, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants line a wonderfully atmospheric network of streets. Amangalla, occupying a historic 17th-century building originally constructed for the Dutch East India Company, makes an appropriately characterful base in the heart of the fort.
AN ISLAND FINALE
