Surrounded by the expansive reaches of the Mongolian steppes, Karakorum was the birthplace of Genghis Khan and his seat of power throughout the vast Mongolian Empire. Vestiges of this era remain here in the form of scattered ruins — Karakorum is a Unesco World Heritage site — among a number of fascinating historical sites.
Today, Karakorum is mostly known for its wide range of outdoor activities, including horse riding expeditions, rock climbing, kayaking and archery. Stay at the Genghis Khan Retreat, a remote ger encampment, which offers the totally unique experience of playing polo on the steppes – read about it here.
Hustai National Park — where wild Przewalski's horses roam free — is a few hours away.
