MONGOLIA IS PERFECT FOR A POST-PANDEMIC ADVENTURE

Mongolia is one of the great frontier territories of Asia. The size of Western Europe with a population barely greater than Brooklyn, its wide open plains and deserts are fringed by immense ridged mountains. Perhaps the best place in the world to get away from it all, we recommend a ger camp or private "glamping" experience to live as Mongolian nomads have for centuries.

The best time to visit is in the summer, June to August, for dry, sunny days and remarkable scenery ranging from khaki-colored steppe to lush green rolling hills. Naadam Festival — featuring the “Three Manly Sports” of horse racing, wrestling and archery —  is held every July in Ulaanbaatar

THE ALTAI

The serrated peaks and open spaces of the Altai represent one of the last great wildernesses in Asia, which for intrepid travelers, is paradise on EarthIt is not an exaggeration to say you could travel for days and not see another soul. Jump in the back of a Land Cruiser and go off-road through the sublime expanses of the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. Here, in the extreme west, the incomprehensibly huge Potanin Glacier lures capable trekkers to the intersection of China, Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan.

The now-famous eagle hunters — who are actually semi-nomadic Kazaks — reside here in the Altai too. Come for the Eagle Festival, which is held annually in September and October. Their neighboring Tuvan herders — renowned for their somewhat eerie throat-singing — also offer unique cultural experiences.

KARAKORUM

Surrounded by the expansive reaches of the Mongolian steppes, Karakorum was the birthplace of Genghis Khan and his seat of power throughout the vast Mongolian Empire. Vestiges of this era remain here in the form of scattered ruins — Karakorum is a Unesco World Heritage site — among a number of fascinating historical sites.

Today, Karakorum is mostly known for its wide range of outdoor activities, including horse riding expeditions, rock climbing, kayaking and archery. Stay at the Genghis Khan Retreat, a remote ger encampment, which offers the totally unique experience of playing polo on the steppes – read about it here

Hustai National Park — where wild Przewalski's horses roam free — is a few hours away.

GOBI

Shielded from the monsoons by the Himalayas, the Gobi is a rain shadow desert with very diverse topography — providing the opportunity for many different types of experiences. For the classic sand dunes, head south, and stay at the Three Camel Lodge — a sustainable ger eco-camp. From your base here, traverse the dunes by camel, sit atop the Flaming Cliffs (pictured) as the setting sun paints the sandstone a fiery tangerine and visit the nearby paleontological dig sites, and explore Yol Valley — a ravine which tapers into a spectacular gorge and ice field that only melts by September.

Suggested Itinerary: Classic Mongolia

PRIVATE MOBILE GER CAMP

Explore Mongolia with your own private mobile ger encampment, which can be deployed anywhere in this vast country — Gobi, the steppes and more — but we particularly like the Altai region. We can set up two camps in rotation, meaning you can journey from camp-to-camp and experience four or more campsites in a specific region — be that next to a nomadic family or isolated out in the great plains with panoramic views.

You will have your own support team, including a private chef, guide and separate gers for dining and other amenities, and even a caravan of yak or camels. You will sleep in a traditional Mongolian ger, simple but decorated with colorful Mongolian crafts and furnished with proper (single) beds. This is an incredible way to explore Mongolia, offering unprecedented depth and immersion in total privacy.

Suggested Itinerary: Naadam Festival & Altai Mountains
