Anantara Chiang Mai Gets Divine Inspiration for the Launch of Dibba Yana Chitta

Visionary artist Chalermchai Kositpipat explores heavenly themes in the design of culinary-focused cruise vessel.

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort, one of northern Thailand‘s most celebrated destinations, has unveiled an extraordinary addition to its river cruise offerings.

This latest venture, the ‘Dibba Yana Chitta,’ or ‘Heavenly Boat,’ is more than just a vessel—it’s a floating masterpiece.

Designed by Thai National Artist Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, famed worldwide for his iconic White Temple in Chiang Rai, the boat promises a unique blend of art, culture, and culinary prowess.

Ajarn Chalermchai, named Thailand’s National Artist of the Year in 2011, drew inspiration from his renowned series of paintings titled ‘Dibba Yana Chitta,’ which explores the journey between earthly existence and the afterlife.

The boat’s intricate design echoes this theme, featuring a hand-carved figurehead of a mythical creature that symbolizes the passage to paradise.

“I have always admired the boats of Ayutthaya (Thailand’s former capital) for their unique and elegant designs,” said Ajarn Chalermchai. “This project allowed me to channel my fascination with ancient vessels while reimagining them through the lens of my artistic style. Dibba Yana Chitta is not just a boat; it is a divine vessel, carrying people toward an otherworldly experience.”

The luxury experience aboard the Dibba Yana Chitta is as exclusive and enchanting. With just 18 seats, guests are treated to a seasonal tasting menu curated by Thailand’s top Michelin-starred chefs. The inaugural menu, available from December 2024 to March 2025, has been crafted by Chef Piyachart Phudtawong, also known as Chef Boy, of Bangkok’s acclaimed Saneh Jaan restaurant.

Born into a family of chefs, Chef Boy rose to prominence as a contestant on Iron Chef Thailand. His expertise lies in traditional Thai desserts, many inspired by rare royal recipes. Guests can savor a seven-course menu of classic Thai dishes, each paired with premium wines from Monsoon Valley, one of Thailand’s leading vineyards.

“River life is at the heart of the Anantara Chiang Mai experience,” said Pitak Norathepkitti, the resort’s general manager. “The Mae Ping River has been the city’s lifeblood for centuries. To observe life unfolding along its banks is to connect with the soul of this destination. Collaborating with Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat to create this one-of-a-kind experience is a true honor.”

The cruise begins daily at 5:30 pm from Anantara Chiang Mai Resort’s private pier, perfectly timed for a sunset spectacle. Guests can enjoy pre-dinner cocktails while soaking in the serene beauty of the historic Mae Ping River. During dinner, the ambiance is elevated with live classical Thai music. Traditional Thai costumes are available for photos for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the cultural experience, adding a layer of extra charm to the journey.
