June to August is very hot in Oman with temperatures pushing 40 °C (104 °F) in the warmest regions, with the humidity high. Many choose this time to head into the mountains for the cooler air. In Salalah in the south, it is the khareef (monsoon) season where there is up to 25mm of rain, and many head here for the cooler temperatures of between 24 and 28 °C (75-82 °F). The khareef's wet winds also create a thick fog, which coats the mountains in moisture, creating luxuriant green hills. Summer is the first fruit season across the country and best time to try the country’s sweet apricots, peaches, figs, and pears. Outside of Salalah, going out in the middle of the day is best avoided at this time.
July-August
Held in the southern city of Salalah, the Khareef festival is celebrated during monsoon season from mid-July to the end of August. During monsoon season, Salalah becomes a verdant paradise with an abundance of Frankincense trees, living up to its reputation as the perfume capital of the world. Music and dance performances from different regions, exhibition and sale of Omani handicrafts, food displays, concerts, carnival games and sporting events take place in town.
