This urban city enjoys a cool climate in the north of Luzon island, approximately 5,280 feet above sea-level. It is surrounded by Luzon's tropical pine forests, and home to exotic mossy plants and orchids. Because of its refreshing climate, Baguio was long ago designated as the Summer Capital of the Philippines by the country's tourism authorities. The city developed on the back of the tourism frenzy this created, and now the one-time quiet village contains a vast array of tourism facilities. Indeed, the area was even used as an R&R destination for American military personnel during the American occupation of the Philippines.
Unlike many cities in the Philippines, Baguio was hardly touched by Spanish colonialism, and thus retains much of its original historical charm, allowing visitors an in-depth look into true Filipino history. The area is in the process of being named a Heritage Zone by the Filipino government.
