Cambodia’s hot and humid weather, like so much of Southeast Asia, is dominated by its monsoons, which makes the drier autumn months the best time to visit. The rains begins to drop off heavily in November and by February are down to an average of 25 mm per month which is about as dry as the country gets. Temperatures, while still hot, are a few degrees cooler than other months with highs often falling below 30 °C, and humidity around 70 percent. With less heat and less rain, it is an ideal time to visit the ruined temples of Angkor Wat just outside the northern city of Siem Reap. Widely accepted as one of the most impressive collections of religious monuments anywhere in the world found, they are perhaps best witnessed in the hazy light of dawn or dusk, where sunrise or sunset casts a thousand shades of red across the ancient temples.

The Water Festival marks the reversal of the Tonle Sap River’s tide, and the end of rainy season. The celebrations last for three days and nights throughout the country but are particularly vibrant in Phnom Penh where there are boat races on the river. There are concerts and performances, and traditional food is cooked and enjoyed.

Independence Day commemorates the day Cambodia became independent from French rule in 1953. The celebrations are centered on Phnom Penh, where a ceremony takes place at Independence Monument, presided over by the King. There is a parade with floats and music in front of the Royal Palace and the people wave flags in the street.
