September to October sees Cambodia enter its second, cooler, monsoon season. Precipitation hits 320 mm in October, the wettest month of the year, and temperatures in the mid-20s are common. In September humidity regularly hits 85 percent. The period marks Pchum Ben, a 15-day religious festival unique to Cambodia, culminating in a three day holiday (usually in early October) when people pay respects to their ancestors. A fascinating time to visit temples when ample food offerings are made to monks and elderly relatives, and the smell of burning incense permeates the surround areas. Though a respectful time, Cambodians, particularly the young, waste no time taking advantage the national holiday, the capital, Phnom Penh, becoming at its most vibrant at night.
