After a scenic drive through the lovely landscape of the Ijen Plateau, visit a famous coffee plantation. Also within the area is a charming hotel built by Dutch colonialists, along with natural hot springs. Coffee lovers will also be delighted by the fine Arabica coffee grown on the premises.
Travel to Paltuding to begin a two-hour hike up to the beautiful crater at Kawah Ijen, an active volcano. At the top lies a blue acid lake – actually the most acidic in the world.
Reaching a height of 660 feet (200 meters), Madakaripura Waterfall lies in the foothills of the Tengger range, near the village of Sapih. Set amidst the lush jungle, the waterfall is a powerful cascade, long revered, and even worshipped, by locals. The Tengger people of the area believe that the water is holy, and as such, use it extensively in various cultural ceremonies.
Rise at 4 a.m. and hike up Mount Bromo in time for the sunrise. It can be a bit cold and cloudy, but the summit of Mount Bromo offers a magnificent vantage point.
The pasir berbisik, or “whispering sands,” are an area of volcanic sands that produce eerie sounds, seemingly akin to whispers. Combined with the desolate, barren landscape, the strange noises lend the pasir berbisik an otherworldly feel.

Located at 6,500 feet (1,981 meters) above sea level, this contemporary lodge provides easy access to the majestic Mt. Bromo. Each room has a scenic view of the rich landscape surrounding the lodge. Each room is furnished in a simple, but comfortable manner, with plush beds, understated wood furniture, cable TV and hot water. Amenities are sparse, as the lodge is intended primarily for retreats, though there is a small photo gallery at the main lodge that showcases stunning photographs of the area. There is a lovely, onsite café serving fresh, local coffee and Indonesian and European food. Jiwa Jawa Bromo is only a one-hour drive to the starting point for a sunrise excursion to Mt. Bromo, and a 90-minute drive from Malang airport and 2.5 hours away from Surabaya airport.
