June to August and the first of the Cambodian monsoons arrive, with precipitation hitting almost 200 mm per day in July. The rains see the temperature drop a few degrees from the April highs, but still average around 28 °C. Bone-dry fields transform to lush green paddies, and clear blue skies can quickly turn a deep, dramatic gray. Lightweight rainproof clothing is essential for this time of year when the inevitable and frequent downpours arrive. Many use the rainy days to take in culture and history, whether the charms of the Phnom Penh’s myriad Buddhist temples or by visiting the sobering Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which pays testament to the nation’s turbulent recent history under the infamous Khmer Rouge.
April - June
Though this festival is referred to as the ‘birthday of Buddha’, it also celebrates Buddha’s enlightenment and passing and as such, is one of the most important events in the Buddhist calendar. Devotees visit the pagodas and make offerings of flowers and fruits, while abstaining from alcohol and other prohibited activities.
