Day 2

Singapore

Start your day the way locals do at a traditional coffeeshop where you will try the staple breakfast of soy sauce eggs, kaya toast, and kopi (strong black coffee strained from what looks like a sock). Today you will explore the enclaves of the three majority ethnic groups that make up Singapore. Start in Little India's busy streets filled with malls, jewelry stores, and colorful statues of Hindu Deities, followed by Kampong Glam, also known as Arab Street. The Sultan Mosque presides proudly at the head of the street and the many side streets are lined with eateries and quirky boutiques. For lunch, you are in for a treat - several treats. At one of Singapore's iconic hawker centers, try several different signature dishes such as delicate chicken rice, warming laksa, prawn noodles, and more. Finally, round out the day at Chinatown which is home to narrow streets lined with colorful lanterns and revered temples including the Buddha Tooth Relic temple and Sri Mariamman temple. If you wish, catch the sunset from the top of the Singapore Flyer and watch as the city lights up.

Day 3

Gunung Leuser National Park

Today you will swap Singapore’s cityscape for the wild jungles of Sumatra. Touch down in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province, where you’ll be escorted to your vehicle. From here, you’ll pass by expansive rubber plantations on the 3-hour drive to the village of Bukit Lawang ending your journey with a 20-minute walk to your stay. Check in to your room at the Jungle Inn. Though the lodging is rustic - you’ll forgo air-conditioning and hot water in exchange for the magical setting. Relax this evening and settle in to your new setting.

Day 4

Gunung Leuser National Park

Depart the hotel on foot after breakfast beginning a 6-hour trek into the wilds of Gunung Leuser National Park. As you trek through the thick throngs of jungle, keep your eyes peeled for Sumatran Orangutans. This being one of their few remaining natural habitats, there is a high chance of viewing them, though as they are wild, encounters are not guaranteed. After lunch, the trek becomes noticeably more challenging as the terrain features steep ascents and descents, with uneven ground requiring careful foot placement. You will spend the evening at a camp with jungle shelters—small structures housing two tents each that provide protection against rain and wildlife. While basic, this authentic jungle experience will appeal to the adventure-seeker.

Day 6

Medan

Depart from the hotel for the 3-hour return drive to Medan, where you will experience the flavors of Sumatra with a unique coffee and durian tasting adventure. Start with a visit to a local coffee shop to sample an array of Sumatran coffee varieties, perfect for enthusiasts seeking rich and distinct brews. Then, dive into the region’s culinary culture at a renowned durian restaurant, where you’ll taste three different types of Sumatran durians, known for their milder flavor compared to Thai varieties. This activity offers a flavorful journey ideal for adventurous travelers and food lovers.
